In the lower buy-ins I play I am increasingly running into the donk shove by the first to act, often leaving me with no option but to fold. So I am wondering if having position is actually becoming a liability.

Having position will never be obsolete and it's more important now than it used to be since there are more good players out there.

obv being able to react as apposed to act will always be an advantage. villain leads out with a shove on the riv and you have optons fold or get your big hand payed its pretty cut and dry. with alot of these type of plays going on some say 1st to act is the new button
