Hello,

yesterday I was at the final table of a €15 knockout SCOOP event at Pokerstars France. 9 Players remaining and typical PS payouts with €190 for 9th and €3.500 for first. We had a massive chip leader sitting on about 150BB to my immediate left, second place having about 25BB. I was third with 20BB and everybody else had between 8 and 12BB.

The chip leader was bullying the table with big (5x) re-raises and was opening alot (almost 60% VPP). He also called short-stack all-ins lightly (86o).

I was dealt QQ in EP and opened 2x. The chip leader 5x raised. Do I fold or go all-in? I am 99% sure that get called with whatever he has.

thanks for advice

Did the CL raise your raise 5x (meaning 10BB) or did he just raise to a total of 5x BBs? Either way, just 4bet shove here.

By your description of the CL you always want to get in your QQ here. Will always be way ahead of his range and you get a chance of having a shot for the top 3 spots. If you had 40+ BB and everybody else still less than 12 (except for the 150 BB CL) I think ICM would be huge and a fold might be correct. In that case you could just super-nit up and play KK, AA only, when CL can still act and play normally-tight when he has already folded.

Your 20BB stack though doesn’t have a big advantage towards villains. So, without crushing numbers I am certain you sould get your QQ AI in this spot.

Only other reason to fold QQ here would be when the payjumps from 9th to 8th etc. mean a significant bump to your roll. If so, you made a huge BRM mistake by playing this 15€ event anyway.

PS: Let me guess, you 4bet shoved, got called by AT and he sucked out? If so: UL, but I don’t think a ICM mistake.

You said he call short stack with 86, don´t mean he is going to call your 20bb that light, maybe you should call pre flop, and try to check raise flop. But if you think he will call 20bb shove pre, just shove then.

For what you said about CL you should not fold QQ.

Thanks for the replies. I had Sen’s reasoning, shoved and lost to JJ.

The CL raised to 10BB.

When saying he called short stacks I meant short relative to his stack. The call with 86 was for 11BB.

You’re going to be ahead of his range here by shoving, and you’re ultimately going to have to build a stack if you want to run deep to the top 3 or possibly win. While it sucks to bust 9th, sometimes it’s a chance we have to take, even for spots we think we’re most certainly ahead.

Remember in poker, we can’t be results-oriented. We have to play each hand and make each decision with intentions of it being with a positive expected value (+EV). That’s what you did here, just that the result wasn’t so pretty. 80% of the time, you’ll get a nice stack and place Top 4, at the least, while still helping give you a shot of taking it down.

For 10bb 3bet I shove QQ with 20bbs too.

I agree you’re not deep enough to be thinking about folding queens to this particular villain especially, you need this double up to make it that much easier to win the money up top.

IMO it’s like being asked ‘do you want to win the tourney?’ and folding would be a ‘no’.
