Played the same tournament last night that Andrew recently reviewed a hand of mine from.  $150 bi, 216 players, 40k starting stack. 8 left and I have 600k. Chip average is 1,080,000 but due to a very big stack with 2.5M effective average stack for the other 7 is 800ish. Blinds 25/50k.  We have two short stacks in the 200-250k range.  I open shove from mp with AQ.  Button has 800k and tank calls it off w/KJ and catches.  Min cash at this point is $888, 7th is $1,070 6th is $1290, and first is $7100.  Due to ICM implications not sure if AQ is proper shove here.  Thoughts?

With no ICM, jamming 12BB is completely standard.  At the point you are at in the tournament, I’d still be aggressive, as the pay jumps aren’t huge, and you still have a great shoving hand.

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Use a tool like ICMizer or HRC not only to get an answer to this specific question but to develop better intution for how to apply ICM in game.

Thanks, I thought it was ICMizer that was the most popular program for these types of situations.  Intuitively it seems like a shove was obvious, but some situations can marginal so I will get the program and start putting in situations as they come up. Haven’t been as diligent as I should be with some of the technology that is out there.

You don’t have to wait for them to come up! You can come up with your own, try experimenting by changing one variable (position, stack size, etc) and see how the strategy changes.

I am in spasms of ecstasy here shoving AQ. The dude who called from the Button should be the one posting at TPE “was I correct to call most of my stack here with KJo?”…

At which point he’d be destroyed by the answers and never post again in the forums and then cancel his sub altogether.

LOL Riceman!  To say I was frustrated when he knocked me out with that hand would be an understatement.  I honestly had to double check to make sure I was actually looking at KJ.

The exact stack distribution and positions of the other players will affect your ideal shoving range a bit, but you can comfortably shove AJs,AQ,TT as a bare minimum. You’re almost certain to be +$EV shoving ATs,KQs,AJ,99 as well, but those can probably be folded if the prize jumps are significant to you.

I’ll strongly second Andrew’s recommendation of ICMizer. I tried and failed to learn the ins and outs of ICM (beyond a general notion of playing tighter) many times before using the program. It’s really efficient and clearly presented, which allows me to learn fast enough that I can maintain focus and motivation, and that can be a problem for me when it comes to studying. As suggested by Andrew, I find my favorite way to use the program is to input a hand I played, and then play around with all the details. Seeing what changes when adjusting each variable helps me generalize the concepts, and I find it helps more with close decisions at the table, rather than simply getting a range for a specific hand and trying to apply that to similar hands.

Lol, this isn’t the 2+2 forum! Still, that call is atrocious even if ICM weren’t a factor.
