Hi TPE Team,

As the BigDog would say in the podcast “this guy is bad at poker and probably terrible at life”.  It's early in my poker journey.  I realise there is a lot of work to do to get me to be +ev, but I'm trying to come up with a plan.

My “main” game for the past 18 months or so has been 9 man $15 buy in hyper-turbos, because I really like the format and find them very relaxing after a tough day at work – but I've been very slightly +ev in them (ROI about 3%).  I saw them as recretation rather than poker.

Now it's time to get serious – I've been playing 180 man SNG $2.50 turbos on PokerStars almost exclusive in an attempt to build a bank-roll – and get some post-flop experience.   And, in the past week I've been focused exclusively on integrating push/fold into my game from 10-15bb.

week I've been working on TPE U for theory lessons and have been trying to integrate push/fold into my game over the past week.

I've almost got push-fold charts memorised for both the non-ante and ante period, and I'm looking for the next “low handing fruit” issue to address.

This week’s stats – exclusively for 180 man $2.50 SNG Turbos (35 tournaments)

As I said at the start, I'm terrible at poker and need a lot of work – but with a job this big I need a plan.

Can anyone help me identify the first couple of priorities? 🙂

When I started playing SNG's I found Collin Moshman's book very eye opening.  It's a few years old but I would think the Strat. is good for low stacks.  There was also a program called Sit N Go Wizard that I would use often to practice.  Good Luck.

Yeah. I've read Moshman and have been applying it (badly it seems). 🙂

Don't use push-fold charts. They're outdated, inflexible and will teach you to pick up bad habits. Get yourself a copy of HoldemResources Calculator and run specific calculations instead. Also, playing $2.50 180-man turbos for postflop experience is…well, it's useless. There's almost no postflop play in those games, or any other games with 'turbo' in the title. You'd be better off playing the $4/180 non-turbos instead.

Honestly, though, I'd say your main priority is to stop beating yourself up. Things like “I suck at poker and I suck at life” aren't going to help your mindset as you move forward. You don't have to ignore your weaknesses, but value judgments like “I suck at” can easily be replaced with “I'm struggling with” and used as a way to focus on improvement, rather than a way to make yourself feel bad.

Good luck!

I think you need to Quantify where you need some help.  Stop playing the “throw away” turbo and sit down and play a single 180 person SNG and post 3 or 4 hands from the first hour…  Then we can all see what is really going on instead of looking at graph stats.  If those look good, we can proceed to the next hour.  Do you have a stat/hand tracker?
