i would say make sure you get the highest resolution screen you can.
some of the gaming laptops have a 1680×1050 res (maybe even full HD these days?) , that would be good if you are planning on tiling tables on the laptop screen
im not very computer savy, but just my two cents. I had quite a few issues with my Dell Studio 17, although in their defense I think it was more windows issues than Dell issues. I had it tweaked by a computer guy lately and it seems to be running very well now and Im quite happy with it for poker purposes.

If you are using it for poker and plan on having a database program as well look for something with a good HD and at least 4gb of RAM. I would also look for something that is easy to carry if you plan on moving around a lot. Even though you want to use it for poker look for a laptop that supports HDMI output with HD. Most video cards can do this, so you do not need top of the line gaming. I suggest this because you can hook your laptop to a TV for multi-table when at home or friends house. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad that is my primary poker computer, it is easy to take with me but the best part I can hook it up to my 40″ and it looks amazing! One other think to consider is battery life. Most laptops that are not Apple fall short in this category. I have heard that HP makes a laptop modeled after the Macbook called envy, which is suppose to have good battery life. What is your price range and I can throw you some suggestions?
"Your either in Sheen's Korner or your with the trolls."
Hey man as many have said here key thing is resolution. Try to get 1920×1200 if you can.
That being said, i just got the asus g17 that came out this year in march(not sure if its g17) and i'm really liking it so far. I think macbooks are way overpriced and you can get the same thing in laptop for half the price. i have owned a macbook pro and thought it wasnt better or worse than a standard high end laptop… that is until the mac broke after the 5th day…(results oriented i know)
anyway once you find one with the right resolution for you on 17', i would reccomend going with alienware/dell/asus/sony for the brand but alienware is a lot of $ for the brand but they're super coooooool. if you have another brand in mind youc an ask me those aren't the 4 end all be all but they're usually pretty solid
get at least 4 gigs of ddr3 ram imo if you are going to 8+ table and surf
250 memory should be ok if u dont have a lot of movies/music, otherwise get more etc
get a 512mb + video card, i prefer gforce nowdays
some other things that are nice are less weight , bluray player, backlit keyboard but not neccessary
gl!
Depending on what else you would use your laptop for depends on what other necessities you may need. For solely poker though:
High resolution screen (someone said tiling tables….if you can tile tables on a Laptop then Bravo but I will say that comes with eye problems)
Ram – need to have 4GB imo.
The hard drive does not matter you can store music, pics, movies, etc on other hard drive to conserve space and if need be just connect the other hard drive to access your documents.
Processor, imo, can be underrated sometimes. ….._cpus.html use this chart to help you choose your processor. 2.X+ Ghz can do the job just fine.
HTP said it right for the video card 512mb+ is fine. But if you play on doing any gaming you will need more.
Hope this helps.
Quick Tip: The bigger the screen the more heat it will create….Leave ALOT OF SPACE for these laptops to breathe or it will cook the insides
