New to the tournament grind and I’m wondering how you treat add-ons as far as bankroll management. For example, on global poker a majority of tournaments will have an optional add-on at the first break.

1) For a $5.50 MTT with a $5 add-on, should you treat this as a $10 MTT, as far as bankroll management?

2) Also, are buying the add-ons a good play? On Global Poker, unless it’s a turbo, they offer them at the first break which is 100/200 level, right before antes start. If it’s a $2-$3 buy-in you get 2,000 chips for the same price of the buy-in (no rake) and if it’s a $5 buy-in I believe it’s usually a 3,000 chip add on

I think add-ons are usually worth getting, but only if you get at least as many chips as the starting stack (ideally more), and optional if you’ve built a pretty big stack already (ie. will have most of the table covered even after they add-on). No rake makes adding chips more appealing, so it might always be a +EV decision.

As for BRM I think you have the right idea, although you can maybe discount the add-on slightly because you’ll occasionally bust in the first hour. Some players are happy to manage BR more aggressively, but if reloading isn’t an option (or just not worth the risk to you) you’ll want to have at least 50x your highest buy-ins and over 100x your average buy-in, ideally twice that amount.

I’d count the $5.50 + $5 MTTs as ~$9.50.

For rebuy+add-on tourneys I treat them as 4x initial price (so $22 for a $5.50), even though my preference is single buy-in + add-on, just to make sure I’m not uncomfortable the rare times I end up rebuying 5+ times.

Thanks man! I’m trying to grind up the bankroll I already have on the site. I’m realizing how much these add-ons effect how many buy-ins I really have for the stakes of tournaments I’m playing. Your explanation of having villains covered at your table after they add-on makes sense. Thanks again DuckinDaDeck!
