I was just wondering how do you guys see the best way to make the best out of what this site has to offer.
I'm reffering here to videos mostly, any idea how can I learn more and quicker because sometimes i feel that i watch a video and the next day is not really something new going on in my mind when i play..so I have the impression that I wasted my time but it's my fault.
Thanks.
This is a really good question and one that I would open up to everyone, not just the pros since you guys are the ones who are applying the concepts.
Personally, I like to stop videos and think about hands a little. If the video involves math I like to try to work it out and see if I come to the same conclusion.
I also like to make sure I am doing my own hand history reviews in Holdem Manager while I am in video mode. Meaning, after I watch a video I try to go and do a review of a tourney I recently played to see if any spots come up that are similar to the concepts covered in the video.
If so I maybe rewatch that part of the video after going through the hand myself. Or if i find other interesting spots I post them here. Just combining self-analysis with the video works for me because my brain is in learning mode so I start thinking better.
One tip with the videos is to check out the theory vids. They are different than the sweats in that they take one specific concept and go deep into that concept. It's a good place to start – Most people have been starting with Hagbards 5-20bb video, bigdog's 3 bet shove video, wein's river video and Panda's small pairs video.
Enjoy!
RFBs advice is sagely as always.
think of any type of learning in terms of depth of understanding.
if you watch a video while playing, you'll probably get the least out of it.
if you watch a video, while taking some notes on that video, then you'll understand it a little deeper.
then on the end of that spectrum is what RFB does. watching a video, pausing to take notes, and then going into your own database to find hands of your own that cover those concepts is really going to drive those concepts even deeper into your understanding.
also take advantage of the forums and the study group. make some poker friends while you're here. people who play the games you do and who you can talk to while you play, sweat, etc.
gl!

Definitely watch vids and then review your hands in like a hand replayer….You will see hands you played and will probably think you are a donk b/c of the way you played it.
I dunno about you guys but I seem to remember my moronic mistakes. The mistakes that make me go, WTF was I thinking??
Something that I like to do that I have found helps a lot is I will record myself playing with my thoughts (my own live sweats). Then I will watch vids, make notes and then go back and watch my vids and see what I was thinking, re-analyze the situation and see what I come up with differently. I find that hearing what I am thinking and trying to understand my decision making process in the heat of the moment is really helpful and makes what I am trying to change a bit more apparent. This also allows my to try to connect what I am seeing in the vids from the pros to what I am seeing when I play. Also gives me a good ability to try to connect theory to application. That's my two cents fwiw
I agree with Hagbard about making poker friends…and I think that is one of the great “added value” aspects of this site. The thing that has improved my game the most is having a core group of friends that I can talk hands with…and what makes it really beneficial is when those friends know your style, tendencies, history, etc because they can take that all in to account when giving you advice. Our hope is that all of you, through this site, are able to surround youself with a bunch of good, thinking poker players who will benefit you well in to the future. Plus, its always good to have more friends!
I would also add…take advantage of the Study Group that Jdog runs. Ive been semi-involved, but hoep to get more and more involved as time goes on.
Finally…join us in the Chat Room! Getting advice immediately after a hand happens can sometimes be best, as you know exactly what you are thinking, you know your exact read and you know your mindset when the hand went down.
