hey guys ,

i am new to the site and relatively new to mtt's. i have been playing one man sit n go's for a while now and have alot to learn about mtt's. my question relates to when the antes are introduced. in a one man the antes do not play as signifigant a role as they do in mtt's. i was wondering what the prefeered way to adjust for them is. i have watched a few of the mtt videos and it seems the instructors just base thier decisions on the number of big blinds they have even when the antes are a signifigant portion of the pot. i never hear anything about ” harringtons m ” or about ” effecive big blinds “. when i say effective big blinds i am referring to the big blind being adjusted to 67 % of the total pot. as an example, if the table were 8 handed and the blinds were 200/ 400 with 25 antes the total pot would be 800, 67 % of 800 would be about 525, making the big blind 525 as opposed to 400 which would effectively reduce your stack size affecting the range you may push. i read about effective stack size in moshmans new book,” the math of holdem “. i was wondering how practical it is to use “m” or effective bb or should i just be judging my stack by the actual # of bb's i have ? sorry i know my first post was a ramble but i am really hoping one of the instructors could give me an opinion.

thank you, frank

the reason people don't use m that much is just the fact that there are two pretty distinct strategies for pre and post antes, and you can talk about bbs in both scenarios. m is kind of an all encompassing stat, but  the strategies still change.

so in general, it doesn't really matter whether you talk about m, effective bb's or actual bbs, as long as you are stack size aware, and actual bb's is just the easiest i think.

I agree..after reading Harrington's book I used M, but after watching the training videos and read the latest mtt info, I felt your bb stack was easier to keep up with and knew what I needed and could do with the amount of blinds I had in front.

its definitely much easier to count, especially live, which i think is why bb's is easier

Agreed. BB's give you a better feel for the game too. IMO

seems we're all the same here

used to use 'm'

now i'm a bb fan and it's much easier to keep track of.

Benny has a good point though;

no matter what method you use, if you apply it effectively your outcome should be no different

I think the specific thing to be aware of is the ratio of ante to sb – its usually 25% of sb on stars and the Full tilt tourneys I used to play (RIP!) – if its higher or lower its worth adjusting but this is essentially giving you your M – but in a more approximate way.

Same as all have said so far – outcome is the same, whilst easier to keep track of….
