Hey guys, first post on the forum.

This is a hand i played earlier today where i just wasn't sure if i did the right thing.

Poker Stars $3.00+$0.30 No Limit Hold'em Tournament – t250/t500 Blinds + t60 – 9 players
TournamentPokerEdge.com Hand History Converter

BTN: BB = 11.8, t5890
Hero (SB): BB = 49.6, t24822
BB: BB = 39.9, t19939
UTG: BB = 60.1, t30062
UTG+1: BB = 5.7, t2837
UTG+2: BB = 4.9, t2442
MP1: BB = 5.9, t2971
MP2: BB = 67.9, t33942
CO: BB = 5.0, t2522

Pre Flop: (t1290) Hero is SB with K of spades A of spades
1 fold, UTG+1 raises to t2000, 2 folds, MP2 raises to t3500, 2 folds, Hero calls t3250, BB raises to t19879 all in, UTG+1 calls t777 all in, MP2 calls t16379, Hero raises to t24762 all in, MP2 calls t4883

Total pot 72720

When the short stack UTG+1 bets 2k of his 2777 i've ranged him on almost any ace or pair and i'm going to raise him all in.

When MP2 beats me to it i decide just to call and evaluate the flop.

Then when the BB shoves i'm its just a great spot to do that with a mid pair+/AT+ so i figure i'm at worst flipping against his range and possibly ahead (AQ,AJ,JJ,QQ)

Then when MP2 calls the shove i basically decide that know im flipping at best but if i call i only leave myself with 10BB.

I decided to shove knowing MP2 had to call the extra 5k and then i have a chance to win a huge pot.

Should i just fold and not risk my tournament life with 40+BB behind or do you think i played it right?

If you fold you still have 42BB and I think I'm really happy to avoid getting it in here. The only time you can be really happy about this spot is if you can be sure that you have all of your opponents dominated, e.g. AQ,AJ,KQ,AT. Don't forget that at this stage all you have is A high and its real strength comes from getting other hands to fold. We're drawing after all! I fold here and don't feel bad about it at all.

As played, I don't mind the flat since I'm not a fan of 4b/calling it off 50BB deep. I think 4betting probably prices us in if MP2 decides to 5bet, although we're probably waaaay behind his range for doing that.

Let's range UTG+1 on your range of Ax+,22+, MP2 on 88+,AJs+,AQo+ and BB on a similar 88+,AJs,AQo our equity = c. 26%. I know we should probably eliminate the shortstack player from our equation as his chips don't change things much, but even against the two jams you only have = 33.69%.

What that means is you have a 33.69% chance of more than tripling up and a 66.31% chance of being eliminated from the tournament when your opponents are representing a very strong range that AKs is not doing too well against multiway.

So… I don't mind the original flat pre (although others may see to play it more aggressively), but then I definitely fold to all that action. We still have 42BBs.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on 4b and calling it off pre.

First off you need to raise MP2 here, you are going to get folds and save yourself chips a decent percent of time. As played BB doesnt really have a supersweet shove spot, he is putting 40BB in the middle, i think you are often going to see AK on him. Kinda depends on dynamics, but i really doubt he is doing this often with 88-TT. Im going to say this is JJ-KK but mostly ak. MP2’s call is also massive, he should be shoving over if he at all minds you joining in.

So this really comes to if you believe mp2 is capable of calling light and BB is out of line here a decent percent or not. I understand the temptation to call(or more correctly shove over, essentially the same thing here), but I think the correct play is folding, at best you are flipping with perhaps between 2-3 dead cards, essentially making yourself a big dog. I think MP2 is going to show up with aces here a decent percent, bb queens/jacks and ak and shortstack a pair, Ax or whatever. This is a decent spot to fold AKs unless you have a read that these people really overvalue their hand and dont know how to fold.

A 4-bet pre would make life easier.

Are you 4-bet calling it off or 4-bet folding?

Yeah, I can find a fold with AKs for 50BB if villian hasn't given me a reason not to.

But yeah, the sizing is an issue. I don't think I default to calling tho- I think we can still 4-bet fold if we can give him credit for folding JJ and worse, but yeah, it's kinda ugly.

Thanks for your input guys,

I think the reason i didn't 4bet pre was down to the fact i'd just moved to this table and had no reads at all.

I wasn't expecting the BB shove (a mistake i know) and didnt want to fold to a 5 bet shove from MP2.

I guess i just wanted to gamble on the chance i hit any outs i have and win the big pot.

I guess a fold is the right call in hindsight.
