Blinds: 400/800, 75 Ante

Villian 1 (UTG), Appx. 35k Chips, Limps
Hero (Cutoff), Appx. 20k Chips, A(Hearts) 9 (Hearts), Calls 800
Villian 2 (BB), Appx. 30 k Chips, Checks

I decided to see cheap flop worried about the UTG limp.

Effectively 3500 in pot.
Flop- 10(diam), 10(hearts), 9(Diam)

Checked to Hero. I bet 1400.
BB calls, UTG folds.

6300 in pot.
Turn- 4 of hearts

BB checks
Hero bets 3000.
BB Calls.

River- 6 spades
Villian bets 10000 into a pot of 12300.

At this point I had ranged the Villian on a hand like J8 or a diamond flush draw. It was so strange to me how he played this hand with such a wet board that I felt like a bet of 10k was him missing his draw. I decided to call and Villian turns over Q10o. Leaving me with little to no chips.

Is there any way I played this hand wrong? Possibly raising pflop could have got him off this but I doubt it with him on BB. Is there any advice for playing players of low caliber like this? I felt for sure any poker player would have checked raised a 10 with such a wet board.

Thank you for feedback.

BB probably would have called a raise anyway preflop but by doing so it helps you narrow his range.

I don’t know that I would play this correctly, but I would have done it the same way you did except fold the river.

By raising preflop and sizing differently, you could have set yourself up for a river shove, which would have been disaster here. But the BB’s range is super-wide here so you were unlucky he had a 10.

It takes a certain level of sophistication to lead with a busted draw on the river. It would depend on your read of V to know whether he’s capable of doing it.

As played seems pretty good. But I would recommend losing the “seeing a cheap flop” mentality especially from 25 bbs when blinds are higher. The question you need to ask yourself here is, Would you ever limp the top of your range in this spot? I highly doubt it. Not only are you not able to control this pot and play in position heads up vs a limper (usually a medicore hand and a fish), but you are basically telling the villian you don't have a strong hand by limping. Isolate limpers! A9s doesn't flop amazing 3 ways. If he 3bets, hit the muck most of the time and move on.

Appreciate both of the feedbacks.

I seem to run into this problem alot when I have a marginal hand that I would prefer to open with but I have limpers in front of me.  For example if 2 people limp in front of me should a hand like this (A9s) be a fold?  I know it is an obvious open when folded to me but I seem to find myself in tough situations when I have a decent hand and there are limpers in front of me. Thanks for help.

In this particular scenario I would probably 4x vs 2 limpers and hope to take it down preflop. You can rep the Q/K if it flops and cbet/fold to a check/shove. VS your stack it's very hard for them to continue out of position unless they have it. Again, it always depends on your opponents when determining whether to isolate or not.

Makes sense. I usually only raise 2-2.5x but it makes sense to raise higher with limpers. Need to incorporate that in my game.

Thanks.

Thanks, Danny. This is super helpful. My home games have a ton of limpers, and after playing in cardrooms and watching videos here, I sort of forgot how to deal with it.
