There’s a flush draw on the flop Andrew 🙂
And that’s all that we can beat, a missed flush draw but, as played I would be folding in this spot. You raised and got called, in an Axx board with a hand with no equity I don’t see anything wrong with doing a cbet, given the size of your cbet though, your intention should be clear, it is going to be either to:
- Double barrel or
- Give up if called
What it should not be (I think) is to shutdown and then hero call. Of all his range we only beat a flush draw and some of them actually beat us (i.e. 8x, Jx) so I think this is definitively a fold every time.

Gah I’ve been misreading hands left and right, thanks chaos.
I don’t think this should be a profitable any two cards c-bet. After all, Hero opened button and Villain cold called SB, so I think his range is overall stronger than ours (for instance, he’s not likely to show up with 97o!). If you are betting here, it should generally be with the intention of giving up when called, but I think not barreling when you turn a gutter is also a mistake.
But yeah, I still think there’s too much Ax in Villain’s range and not enough flush draws. The Ac on the board actually blocks a lot of Villain’s most plausible club combos that would call preflop.

Chiming in to actually disagree (slightly) with Andrew for the first time in a while – I don’t necessarily think this an ‘any two cards’ c-bet, but I do think this reasonably static board favours us as the preflop raiser pretty heavily. So while I would give up with say, 9h7h here, I would bet when we have a club, just because we need to keep our c-betting % quite high (probably >75%, maybe even more if we think villain doesn’t flat too many Ax hands) and we do also have three to a straight, so we have good barreling opportunities.
That said, I think you missed one of those opportunities here – the J is a card we should fire. I also think the river call is not good, we have a ton of better hands to call with (KK/QQ, plenty of Jx, A7, 87) so we don’t need to be calling a hand so low down in our range there unless we know villain is bluffing way too much, which we don’t know yet. You don’t want to be putting yourself in ‘hero-call’ spots against unknown villains – you can certainly call some non-Ax hands here, but if you call 97, you’re calling too many.

Matt,
It’s possible that I’m underestimating just how loose a $5 player in the SB will be here. However, I think you’re underestimating just how often Hero will have nothing here, as a button opener. The SB’s range *ought* to be quite a bit stronger than ours pre-flop, even if Hero has a slight advantage at the top end as a result of the AK/AQ/AA in his range.
