was playing in hard rock 1 k 1 milly gtd approx 60 left from 1700 starting. We’re at 4/10/20k blinds. Wanted thoughts on this poorly played hand loose older guy opens from MP to 50k he has about 800k I’m in sb with A4 hearts I call I have 700 k and bb with 500k calls as well. Really should have 3b with my suited A to 150 but by trying to be more conservative I increased variance.

Flop comes JJ4 1 heart I check bb leads for 60k we both call. Really think fold here would be better out of position against 2 opps. At the time was thinking any heart A or 4 would give me a lot more equity and could be ahead.

Lon turn black A I check bb check old guy bets 100k I call bb folds

river was black 6 I check he bets 150k I tank fold. Really think he has a jack or bigger A a lot in this spot. But I have severely under repped my hand with odds I’m getting should have called. Thoughts ?

I am not sure how an A on the turn would help your equity, since now you have 2-pair and you’re playing the board because of your kicker. Any J already has you dead, and any other A beats you. I think I would continue in this hand only if there is a heart or a 4 on the turn. Ace is a very bad card for you here.

When you flat pre what kind of flop are you hoping for? Bottom pair and a runner runner flush draw isn’t the worst result. Agree that A on the turn is a terrible card for you.

You’re doing way too much hoping and chasing here. Fold pre-flop, fold flop, fold turn.

Andrew,

why is this a fold preflop? If I give a range for villain to be 88+, AJo+, ATs+, KQs (which is a little on the tighter side for a “loose older guy), I am getting 2:1 on a call. There is a good chance that the BB might call or fold, as for the BB to 3-bet OOP, he needs to have a very good hand, or he needs to know how to squeeze and win the pot.

You have a bad hand (relative to V’s range) and bad position, and you aren’t closing the action. Even if BB just calls, that’s bad for you. You are going to get very few +EV spots post-flop. You can’t feel good about flopping one pair, even if it’s an Ace. There are very few flops where your hand will be more than marginally +EV, and quite a few where you’ll have to do nothing but check-fold.
