This question is concerning hand reading on an elementary level.

When you raise a hand pre flop and get one caller who is in position , what is the very basic thoughts that go through your mind about his range. If I continuation bet and he calls what now goes through your mind. I am wanting just the basics so that I can start to improve in this area.

Thanks,

Barrett

Im not a pro, but would like to give my advice. First of all, it's hard to say anything about this situation in general.

First of all, you need to think about a few variables, like:

– General thoughts opponent: is het loose, tight, flat a lot etc

– Stacksizes

– Your own image

– Texture flop

I would say you would have to post a few spots, becouse it would be impossible to give some sound advice without any info.

I'm still at an elementary level too, but I've found that playing and studying cash games can help you develop in this area.  Cash games and tournaments are very different, and it can be detrimental to use cash game strategies while playing tournaments (and vice versa), but cash games can definitely improve your ability to hand-read.

I'm a mediocre cash game player, but just putting in a lot of hands and seeing a lot of spots helped me a whole lot.  (My first decent upswing happened immediately after I'd put in several thousand hands in a couple of days at 10NL.  Don't know if it was a coincidence, but I doubt it.)

you have to think about how often they are calling raises.  If they are playing a lot of hands, you can generally assume that their range is wide and doesn't have to be a premium.

Also, where did you raise?  If I raise in early position and the player flats in early position, they tend to be relatively strong to be calling our raise with so many people behind left to act.

You also have to take into account their stack size.  Are they playing a big stack, or are they at a critical point where they will be commited to the hand?
