Played event 1 at Parx, and went deep, There were over 1800 players, and I played the last flight which started at 11AM, and this hand went down at approx. 1AM. Starting stacks were 30k, and my stack had been fluctuating all day where I had been over 100k, and down to 19k. Tables were breaking up quickly, and I had been at this table for a half an hour, and had cultivated an active image. Blinds were 1500/3000/400, and i had 3 bet shoved one hand, and open shoved another with between 10-15 bb's. One orbit of folding later we are 50 away from the money, and I am sitting with about 17 bb's, villain is in his 20's, seems nitty, and has not played a hand since I sat down at this table. BTW I am an older guy, but I dress, and play like a young grinder. I could probably check/fold my way to a cash, but that would be ridiculous, as min-cashing would pay about $609, and 1st place pays over 100k. On to the hand: villain who has over 25 bb's raise's to 9k from UTG+2, folds to me in middle position, and I look down at 99. I have approx. 17 bb's left with about an hour to play before bagging chips for day 2. Is folding here even a consideration? Can I just call to set mine, or do I have to raise, and if so, should I not just shove considering the situation? I am not worried about the players behind me, as table is playing very tight, and if someone wakes up with aces or kings than so be it. Thoughts please…

Without a read this is a shove, but against the player you described I can see folding.

Set mining is out of the question. As it will cost you 9000 to see a flop, you'd have to expect to win 90K+ when you hit a set, which obviously you can't.

It doesn't seem like Villain will fold too often, and you have just 42% equity against a calling range of {88+,AQ+}.

With four players behind you, the risk of someone waking up with JJ+ (generously assuming they'll fold TT) is over 5%. That's not trivial, and it's enough to swing a close shove into a fold.

Yeah, I kind of thought that this might have been a fold under normal circumstances. However, I had been playing 14 hours at this time, and I felt that I needed a decent stack to make it worthwhile to play day 2 ( i didn't want to start day 2 with less than 20 bb's).

I incorporated this feeling into my decision to shove, and hoped that he had AT+, 77+ so that I would at least be in a race or better. Maybe my desire to accumulate chips for day 2 overwhelmed a more logical decision which would have been to fold, and wait for a better spot? I guess bagging any chips at all is better than getting knocked out? Thanks!

Forgive me, but I'm a bit confused……….  You are still on Day 1c, the SATurday game right?  You say you are on 1.5/3k levs which is lev 14 for the Parx structure.  Lev 15 (Last lev of day) is always 2k/4k.  NO WAY you are 50 away from the money………..  There were still a bunch of people buying into day 2 w/ 6bb's.  290 players made DAY 2.  ONLY 182 or so got paid.  You couldn't have been 50 away from the money at this point.

I don't mind the fold depending on how you feel about the open raiser and everything Andrew said.  I will also say I think your statement about coming back to 20bb in this type of structured tourney is not a good statement.  Last BigStax series in the huge 300, I ended day 1 w/ 87k.  Day 2 starts w/ 2.5k/5k, so I had 15bbs about.  I turned that into 13th place and $4500.  20bb's at Parx during BigStax is PLENTY……..Matt Glantz & Parx put together great structured tourneys.  This whole series is the BEST on the east coast and one of the best besides the WSOP Main that you will have a chance to play.  that being said, coming back with 20bb's and 60 or 90 minute levels is awesome.  Most are not jamming lite.

Just a thought.  Don't listen to me though, ANDREW is da MAN

P aire you are right ” Andrew is da Man”. What can I say? It had been a long day, and maybe I was off by 50-100 players to the money.

Props to you for 13th going into Day 2 with 15BB's! I know that this can be done. I just hate playing the short stack! I guess that I need to be more patient. BTW I agree that the Parx Bigstax is a great structure next to the WSOPME. Definitely beats Borgata! Good luck my friend!
