Good evening TPE,

It's been a while as I went on hiatus to take some tests and straighten out a few things I had going on.  I'm happy to be reading these posts again.

I am wondering how you all might adjust the range you put a villain on when he is the very big stack and does this.  The question of what I should do is one I wouldn't mind opinions on, but I'm more interested in what range you would put him on.  I'll explain my thinking after the hand history.

Small 1$ rebuy turbo MTT, winner taking $58, 10 places paid, 7 players left (edited as before I wasn't sure if there were 7 or 14 left).

That is all.  What range do you put him on?  I only have 47 hands on him and not much read but he is being rather loose.  VPIP 37%, PFR 23% 3bet 21.4% and limp 10%.

I don't know what to make of the fact that he's the very big stack.  That's my main quesiton about impact on his range.  Do we trust that the big stack isn't spewy if we don't have a read, or do we suspect that they may be bullying, and adjust the range we assign?

What about that sizing?  I wish could know if he had 3xed it before this. It makes me think he's only playing strong pairs or maybe garbage.

Then there's his being UTG.

I feel like all three of these aspects maybe have one simple impact on his range, but in combination they make it more unpredictable.  Of course I may be over thinking this.  Of course maybe there is no overthinking, as long as you don't time out.

Thanks for reading, hope you've all been crushing.

Have a good evening.

I think he would have a slightly tighter than normal opening range assuming not a final table purely as a result of having to call off 8-9bbs if they shove but I doubt it would tighten significantly as big stack would probably realise that 8-9bbs can't really play back without a reasonable value hand.

I would probably suggest 22+, Axs, KTs+, KQ+, QTs+, JTs+ and maybe some unsuited broadways if he is on the aggressive side. I think it also makes a difference if this is a final table as big stack will probably realise that the medium stacks here cannot play back while there are at least three very short stacks at the table. That makes it a very good opportunity for the big stack to raise lots of hands and steal liberally.

As far as your hand is concerned, no need to think about it too much. GII happily and good luck if it is a race!

I sifted the hand history and found that it was the FT by this hand.  Another factor I didn't put into his range is the low 1$ rebuy stakes.

Thanks for the response PokingFun.  A follow up question to your response is –

What range would he have if he made this bet with only 27BB instead of 47BB?  Much tighter, yeah?

I'm not sure with 27bbs it would be much tighter as he still has the table covered so playing back might be tough for other similar stacks although I do feel it might begin to eliminate some of the weaker Axs, smaller pairs, non-suited broadways etc but certainly not guaranteed. Much would depend on how aggressive villain is.

I think in this spot I would be still raising the whole range that I noted above with either 27bbs or 47bbs as I feel the table dynamics here are such that a steal gets through tons while the other 20+ bbs stacks are waiting for the shorties to bust. If I had say 20bbs then I would tighten up considerably as far as my opening range is concerned though.

Its maybe an interesting question for the pros here to ask if they were UTG what is their range for say 20bbs, 30bbs and 40bbs stacks to see how it might differ amongst the pro population.
