I think the main reason is that we reward ourselves more for playing tight when we 3x it, because we keep more hands in our opponents' ranges. Thus we get paid more often. Making an extra 50 chips when an opponent calls our 4x and then folds to a cbet is nice, I guess, but when someone flats our 3x from the big blind with Q9o and flops top pair against our AQ, QQ, KK, or AA, we are so many more chips glad we didn't make that guy fold.
