Ok so here's a situation I find myself in fairly regularly.

I'm deep in a tourney and we're past the bubble, just and I'm in a reallys strong position – eg 3/151 – but chip wise not that deep – around 75bb.

I find that often I'll keep going at this spot and keep being fairly ag, but then lose a couple of  hands with a marginalish call – ie an 11bb shove from the button into my BB and I have like a,9.

Then I'm suddenly back in the pack and have to work my way back up.

I'm torn between wanting to stay well ahead of the curve with the blinds going up relatively quickly and wanting to protect my stack.

Is this a good point to shift gears and tighten up – or is it a case of still barelling away?

Should I just be ignoring my chip count position here?

Would appreciate any thoughts…

just to add – obviously at this point it's mostly all in pre-flop chip wise – so is it worth calling an ai shove of say 30bb with a hand like a,qs? or even AK

When you accumulate a largish stack deeper in a tourney you have a big weapon which can really help put you in postion to win the tournament. You can take some chances, and keep pressure on the rest of the table. I would pay attention to gameflow and how aggressive/passive or loose/tight the table is. If they are flatting every raise you make then you will need to tighten up your range and play more TAG, but if they are folding a lot, then by all means keep your finger on the raise button. The one spot where you usually can tighten up is right after the money bubble burst. People are going to just look to get their stack in and double up after they have secured a cash, so you can't put as much pressure on them with a bigger stack.

There are plenty of times where you will lose your big stack, but thats just variance. Calling an all in from the button with a9 in the bb is most likely a fistpump call and it's just unlucky if they have you beat. It's spots like these that allow you to continue to build a stack. As for calling 30bb shove preflop it depends on the player. Most of the time players dont just open ship 30bb, but I have seen it and i do call a bit tighter because I don't really want to flip for 30bb each when we have a good edge on the field. I wouldn't get into the habit of folding ak preflop to one player post ante though;)

Pretty much what James said.

With your stack you have the option to do so many things. Depending on game flow, stack sizes, your image and loose/tightness and skill level of your opponents, this will determine how you use your big stack.

I wouldnt worry about losing pots in situations where you are calling with A9 in correct spots. Basically dont be results oriented. If you lose your big stack and drop to 30 bb, adjust how you are playing, look for good situations to double up. 30 bb is plenty!
