Deep in an 8-Max tourney on Stars with 4 players left (from 869) the following hand came up:
Poker Stars $3.00 No Limit Hold'em Tournament – 10000/20000 Blinds + 2500 – 4 players
TournamentPokerEdge.com Hand History Converter
Hero (BB): BB = 36.7, 734918
Player3 (CO): BB = 22.2, 443182
Player4 (BTN): BB = 33.2, 664151
Villain (SB): BB = 38.2, 764749
Pre Flop: (40000) Hero is BB with Q Q
2 folds, Villain calls 10000, Hero raises to 55000, Villain calls 35000
Flop: (120000) 6 9 5 (2 players)
Villain bets 40000, Hero raises to 140000, Villain raises to 707249 all in, Hero folds
Villain was playing really bad preflop, playing way too many hands and limping very often. However, he didn't seem to be getting too out of line post-flop. I felt he probably had 2 pair or better so I mucked my queens. I felt I had a pretty good edge on my 3 remaining opponents and could wait for them to make mistakes so that factored into my decision as well. It actually felt like a pretty easy fold at the time and I didn't tank long at all. Do you guys think I played the hand well on the flop? I know one can't be results-oriented in poker but I did go on to take 1st place after deciding to fold and keep my remaining 500k stack.
Hhhhhmmm……I think a probably go with my Q's here……
If he has a set or a straight with 87 (or if he slowplayed AA/KK) then good luck to him. Had you seen him slowplay big pocket pairs previously/recently??
If he has A9, does he seem like the type of player to commit with TPTK??? What about 98 or 97 for the TP/Gutshot…. maybe TT/JJ?? Does he seem to be the type of player to limp/call with pocket pairs??
What sort of hands had you seen him show up with @ showdown??
Just some of the things I'd consider before going with the Q's
Interested to hear what others think.

What was your image like at the table, were you coming into a lot of pots and folding post? That is a pretty good board for your queens, I was wondering if he was trying to push you off your hand, maybe with KA-I see that a lot at these stakes.
"Your either in Sheen's Korner or your with the trolls."
if villain is passive postflop and not getting allin on this flop with worse than 2pair, then why are you raising?
the board is dry and there's really not that much to protect against so i don't really mind flatting the flop to trap and let him put more money in with worse.
but if i'm raising the flop it's to get allin.
Afterwards I thought about some of the types of hands southpaw mentioned, it is possible he was overplaying top pair / good kicker, or top pair / straight draw. However I think what made me fold is I had played a couple of pots with Villain while 4-handed where it was a similar situation. I raised preflop and got heads up with him, he lead into me on the flop, I re-raised. Until this hand he had folded to my pressure on the flop. So this time when he lead out I think he was expecting a re-raise from me and perhaps thats what he wanted. Conversely, maybe he was sick of me scooping pots from him and decided to make a stand. My image was presumably pretty tight as anything that had recently went to showdown in a decent sized pot I had the best hand. Also I was playing less hands than my 3 opponents. I have no stats on him as I don't currently use a HUD. But from my observations he was playing crazy preflop and limping in with a huge range of hands. Post flop he seemed to be playing pretty snug however. I had the complete hand history e-mailed to me so I think I will review some more hands he played to help determine if my fold was justified. I just haven't had much free time to do so yet. Hagbard- thats a good point, my re-raise wasn't very well thought out and perhaps a call would have been more appropriate in this spot.

completely agree with hagbard here – if villain is playing passive pre and snug post, and then he donk leads into you after 3betting, i would not be raising the flop – i would be flatting in position. by raise folding, you may as well have 23o in this situation, you have given up all of the equity that your hand has.
