So was playing some the other day, and noticed a reg who has very good s.s. results over I think 2k sample or so; anyways I saw that he called some hands on the button w around 20bb (the one I saw was JTo I believe it was say button vs HJ or so; I think he only had like 12-15bb vs a weaker players min raise).
Now I would assume this is a losing play, but clearly this fellow is doing pretty well for himself. So wtf are we all just like 2 years behind this fucker and 2018 will be the year of consistent button flatting w these stacks?

First question what are s.s results?
Button flatting with shorter stacks is not that uncommon, in fact if you are from Canada it is almost compulsory and is written in poker lore.
To the case in point, a lot of people don’t flat in position from these stack sizes for several reasons
1) it’s tricky to play post flop and if you do it will likely be for all your chips
2) if you are just playing fit or fold then you are burning chips you cant afford to
3) you are setting up squeeze spots for the blinds
therefore, the more common practice is to preserve chips for fold equity when you reshove / steal.
The player in question is probably very comfortable with his post flop play and short stack play. That said it could well be a leak in his game that he is compensating for elsewhere.

I think the player is probably doing this with high cards not good enough to shove but will flop good and give him the option to apply pressure on a lot of flops. Maybe AA/KK hoping to induce a squeeze or play a pot with a low SPR.
Ill use J10o with 13bb as an example. My math might be wrong, but you would probably flop TP around 25%. If its just heads up and the villain cbets 1/2 pot, the pot would be around 9bb and you could probably shove your remaining 11bb. If you flop 2nd or 3rd pair you have some backdoor possibilities and on some flops gutshot/open ended to go along with your 2nd/3rd pair that gives you some equity to shove over a cbet. And flops that you don’t hit its very likely the villain didnt hit it either so you can apply pressure that way too.
I would guess the range to do this with is off suit broadways (excluding AK and AQ), suited broadway (excluding AJs+ KQs) and maybe 10-9s.
It could be a losing play against good players, but against most players it probably a play that works well.
