Hi all

i play micro stakes on stars and often at the begin of a MTT i encounter such a situation.

Blinds are low, all deep, some russian fish shoves his 100BB stack allin and i hold AK.

It always is +cEV but often enough i'm out and all dreams of winning the MTT shattered..but folding though would make it possible to do run etc 🙂 And even a double stack at the begin doesnt mean much.

Any suggestions how to play that.

thanks

Have a solid bankroll and take it every time.

In micro limits i always call in early stage an 100BB open shove with JJ/QQ+ and AK (depends on villain). 100BB openshove + caller… My calling range would be only QQ/KK+ (depends on situation and villains)

This, especially the bankroll part

Besides that, taking these spots increases your ev and thus results in lower variance in mtts in the long run, short term it seems like variance but due to top heavy pay out structures you should be more then willing to call fishy shoves

yeah bankroll is the key here.

if you are finding it hard to wade through the huge fields, i would think about mixing in some 180s or even smaller as well as playing some of the bigger MTTs.

I definitely agree with everyone, but would just like to add something.

This may look confusing at first, but what you need to consider is the difference between chip variance and $ variance.  Calling a 100BB shove with AK is high chip variance, but it decreases your $variance because most of the time you are not going to cash anyway.  A 30-45% chance of losing right now really isn't a big deal given you are probably losing (i.e., not cashing) 80-90% of the tournaments you play in.
