Final table of a live $400 event.
Prizes
1st: 30,800
2nd: 18908
3rd: 13940
4th: 10160
5th: 7667
6th: 5855
Blinds 12K/24K/4K
Stacks: Hero BB – 1.7 million, SB 400K, Button 800K, cutoff 720K, UTG1, 990K, UTG – 340K
Stacks were fairly deep for a final table. Button was scared money folding a lot, barely raising his button. a number of hands SB vs BB more than any other two players. In general SB was a sharp, aggressive player, but sometimes countered aggression with more aggression with when he thought it wa a good spot. When we were down to 3 tables saw SB 4-bet over a BB squeeze with A8o (cracked aces) also saw him check/shove A7o on 874dd board and had unlikely knockout of top set.
Other two players a little too tight trying to ladder with only UTG playing a little loose and erratic.
Folds to SB who raises to 67K. This was the same raise size the other times button folded to my SB.
Hero is in BB with QJo. Hero raises to 175K. SB shoves (total 400)
A) Should hero call or fold to the shove?
B) If my raise commits me to calling a shove, is it better to flat pre-flop and 3-bet with a more polarized range pre-flop? At this depth is it better to shove if I’m going to 3-bet?

You gotta know what you’re going to do before you 3-bet, which it seems like you realize now. He’s too short for you to have any kind of raise-folding range, so really you just need to develop two ranges: a flatting range and a jamming range. The jamming range shouldn’t be polarized, of course. However, I think QJo will play much better as a call. I don’t think your equity is particularly good vs his get in range, but you should be able to realize equity quite well after the flop.

Agree w Andrew 100% here. One thing to consider is that this dude is pretty much tied for second shortest, so basically if utg was significantly shorter shoving becomes better since its not great ICM wise for SB. That being said, I would not expect this guy to have any clue about ICM based on your description. So, shoving is really tempting, but calling is pretty nice and gives us some good high card combos in our calling range. I guess the worst part about jamming is letting him just get all in and not play a flop w a hand like 66 or A5s or whatever. Very interesting spot; curious if I’ve played w you before, believe you said u live in Vegas?

Thanks for the post. IMO I would be just calling here as for the reasons mentioned above.
