I find the early stages the toughest as there are too many multiway pots and I get sucked out on a lot. What is the correct strategy to accumulate chips?

I’d like to hear some of the ways you guys play at this point.

I have made 1 and will make a few more vids of early stage play. Its a priority as alot of people have asked for them. I have to be honest tho. I play extreamly tight in early stage of mtts. There is not alot of moves or creativity to it. Its really ABC standard poker probrably more then you realize. So look for the vids in the next week or so. They are in Que to be posted and will get up asap.

Just be the one sucking out instead.

butnah, I can only speak for the lower stakes, but playing pretty straightforward, fundamental poker is usually enough to chip up in mtts.  I can’t sleep, so this is a list of a few things I’ve picked up from personal experience, talking to others, 2+2, and simply watching people:

  • get comfortable with deep stacks– know what you can do with different stacksizes.  Figure out implied odds, reverse implied odds, etc.  There are no antes, so you don’t need to play as many hands (pots aren’t as big preflop), but there are still spots/fish out there, and you’re often 75-150 bb’s effective, so who gives a shit about antes?
  • you don’t need to 3bet light (since there are fewer chips to win in the pot) but you don’t have to not 3 bet light either.  People are bad at poker.  They play weak-tight and fold a lot.  You can create an image and let people spew when you have a hand, or you can just make them your bitch and make them fold time after time.
  • pay attention– some people will just spew chips right away; know who’s there to donate and who’s there to playr.
  • stick to fundamentals– play hands in position.  raise your buttons liberally.  don’t play marginal/weak hands OOP.
  • play your game– early game isn’t incredibly different from midgame in most tourneys imo.  NLHE is NLHE for the most part.

This all seems pretty easy, but I have a list of stuff like this written down that I read all the time.  I have an AIM conversation with HITTHEPANDA from about 10 months ago printed out and glued to an old cereal box that I use as a mousepad and I’ve got the thing practically memorized.  I also have a word document on my desktop entitled “Smart things people say about poker” that I stick brilliant concepts that I pick up from videos, AIM convos, 2p2 and so on.  I’m rambling.

yeah for the most part i’m playing really straightforward in the beginning of a tourney.

and i can’t really stress enough how important getting a solid fundamental game down is. however, once you do, i think there’s a lot to be said for stepping outside of the box and playing with creating an image for yourself and dynamics with other players to help you get paid when you do pick up a big hand.

but without a solid understanding and good fundamentals i think you’ll just end up spewing if you try and get too creative. remember you can’t win the tournament at the beginning.

Can I see it? =P

And yeah if you aren’t comfortable postflop and you’re playing lower limits, playing a solid TAG game preflop is a good strategy as people aren’t paying close attention and you’ll still be able to get plenty of value.  That’s not to say you shouldn’t look for the player opening wide, seeing if he can fold to 3bets preflop, and 3betting him with suited connectors etc but don’t go taking crazy lines if you aren’t comfortable with what they mean to you and your opponent.
