Is it stupid for me to dream of being able to reach the top level of tournament players in the world one day?

Intresting topic. It's not stupid to think that at all , you could become anything u want to be in life whether thats a poker player or the president of the united states of america lol , all you have to do is work hard and enjoy the journey you go through 🙂

Stupid to dream it? No. Stupid to expect it? Yes. Stupid to try for it? That depends. Stupid to be satisfied with nothing less? I think so.

I think of it like this: suppose 100,000 people want to be among the top 10 in the world. Right off the bat maybe only 1000 of those actually do the kind of work and make the necessary sacrifices to do that.

Off those 1000, only 10 are going to make it (probably none of the other 9000 will). So even if you actually put in the work, your odds are pretty slim.

The question to ask is whether you will consider it a waste of time and effort if you end up among the other 990. That's by far the most likely outcome, so you should think about how you'll feel about that, not just how much you want to be among the top 1% or whatever.

Andrew,

I really like the way you approach things. It doesnt matter if its a technical subject or a question like this one.

I know you have been doing software engineering from your podcasts, but do you think you developed this sense with poker + engineering mind and practising or something else?

Plus, I would be interested to hear how you juggle the work and poker together. Plus you are doing the live thing and you are preparing study materials for us and you are actively answering our questions.

How many hours do you sleep a day lol?

I am also a software engineer(Amazon), and the job itself is pretty demanding and I feel like I need to study new technologies and stuff just like any other developer.

How do you find the balance?

I know this is a bit off, but I think your strategy may help others like us.

Thanks, Never, but I think you're conflating me with Nate. Software development is not my bag. I credit my background in competitive debate and in philosophy for a lot of my ability to think critically.
