Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if you need to learn the poker math, as i find it difficult going to learn and even more difficult to implement it in fast internet poker rooms. Basically do you need to know it to get good?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Learning the math aspect of poker is something that can really use to help your poker game and become a well rounded player.  Just like anything else in poker its tough.

I found out by practicing and putting in the hours, it will become second nature and get much easier.

Best,

DT

If you don't learn the math, you have to learn something else that accomplishes the same thing. Over time, you'll learn the math anyway, but it's the order in which you learn concepts that changes the way that you play, if that makes any sense.

I am a terrible hand reader. I can't range my opponents well. I'm really good at playing my own hand. So now I learn to mix up my play so I'm not so transparent. It doesn't teach me to range players better, but it helps provide cover while I figure it out.

I struggle with the more complicated math. Some of the math is not so hard to learn and implement such as pot odds and equity. I don't think you have to be a math wizard to be good at poker but the more tools you have, the bigger your edge is over your opponents. Like Joel said there are other skills you can work on that may come easier for you and you can build your way up to the math.
