Live tournament $120 buy in. I had been our table chip leader with 12 left (8 paid) when I ended up all in blind vs blind AA losing to KK, knocking me down to 12K.

UTG – Selectively aggro Asian who hasn't shown down a hand but has managed to stay among chip leaders playing maybe 1.5 hands per orbit

Button retired woman who has been playing only premium hands, mostly playing them fast and face up. She is now chip leader after rivering me KK vs AA

Blinds (800/1600/200) UTG raises to 4000. He's been fairly solid. Button calls. I am in SB with A4s. and 12K. I know if I shove, I'm getting at least one caller who both have really strong ranges. At best I have 25% equity against one caller, with a slight chance that the UTG can force out the button to get heads up. Should I just shove and pray here, or hope that I can find shove an unopened pot or pick up a slightly better hand? If this is a fold, what is your calling range?

What is UTG's stack size?

I believe this is a fold.  You are short stacked, but you're not an insect yet.  While you're not an insect, you don't have much fold equity here, as you said. The raiser being UTG makes things pretty tough.  A4 doesn't do that well against very many hands he could have.  You would basically be hoping he has KQ or worse (making this one of his selectively aggro hands) and then hoping to run pure if he calls.  Top that off with the chipleader calling on the button – it doesn't look too good.

What would my range be for shipping it in this spot?  I'd actually keep it pretty tight here. Probably shoving AJs+ and 88+

Clubber,

I agree with Schwartz and Phoebus.  You've got zero fold equity here, and after your fold you'll be left with 7bb's. This is enough for some good fold equity over the next 4 hands or so before you get to the BB again.  I'd look to shove at my next open shove opportunity, hopefully on the BTN or CO.  A4s can look pretty, but in this spot with a 2.5bb open and a call, you're dead.  You'll be facing A's that dominate you, or midpairs+ that can hold up well against an A.

I'd shove with 88+, ATs+, AQo+, KQs

Thanks for the post,

Wacky

Here I would just fold as you have no f/eq at all against either player and a hand like A4s you really do want at least some sizeable chance that they all fold preflop to make it profitable. Wait for a better opportunity in mid-late position as that will be coming round soon.

For what it's worth, I did find the fold, and would have flopped the nut flush. The older lady in the BB showed QQ, so my analysis that a) I was crushed and b) nobody was folding was at least accurate.

Most important thing with this outcome is not to be swayed by the result of the hand. You made the correct play.

While I agree with most people saying that this is a fold, it's important to note that your equity vs a hand that calls you is going to be WAY better than 25%. The only range against which A4s does not have >25% equity is AA exactly – vs KK+ it has 26.2%.

vs JJ+ AK+ = 30%

vs 99+ AQ+ = 31%

vs 66+ AJ+ = 33%

vs 22+ QJs+ KQo+ AT+ = 38%

Against a possible two callers here I'd probably be getting it in with something like 77+ AJ+, but it's tough to say in a live tournament. It would depend on my read on the strength of each of the other players.
