so I’ve been with TPE for about a month or so now. Spent a lot of time studying and now I’m seeing some results.

I’ve been cashing regularly and going quit deep in MTT’s but not making final tables. I’m finding that by the time we are super deep I am usually playing push fold with about 12-17BB’s. I get the variance part of poker but it seems to be a big trend in my game ATM. I suspect it could be due to playing too tight in later part middle stages, but again still new to MTT’s so there’s a good possibility I’m missing something bigger that I’m just unaware of.

Early/middle stages my range reads are usually fairly accurate so I’m picking my spots well and chipping up nicely and then as we get deeper I’m finding things just grind to a hault.

500ish runners I’m busting 15th-50th 2k+ runners I’m busting 75-200ish.

I get this is not really a ton of info here to find a potential leak, I’m just wondering if anyone can provide some general feedback on possible solutions or video series to watch.

Cheers

Sample size is small, maybe 50 MTT’s???

Not sure if it’s a numbers game problem at this point.

My biggest concern is as I get into the later stages of a tournament I find myself regularly with 18-22BB, which I think is a bit of an awkward spot to be in, little to heavy to be push folding but doesn’t leave a ton of play if I’m opening pots 2.25-2.5x, c-betting and shutting down if I get called on the flop. So naturally I’m tightening up and am blinding/ante down to that push fold range. So maybe I’m also looking for info on playing an awkward stack in the mid-late/late stages of a tourney when you Arnt in push fold mode yet??

I can speak to this as it was my largest problem for a certain stage of my development and something I worked very long and hard at correcting.  For me, it came down to my ranges.  Because my range was a bit too constricted it emphasized too much of survival and not enough on realizing equity.   The end result would be that the longer the tournament, the more spots I missed to extract max value, which caught up with me just about at the money bubble.  Lots and lots of min cashes later, I decided to correct this.

To be fair, despite UNDERSTANDING The problem, solving it was very challenging and eventually started withing with DannyN13, who was particularly good at this skillset.  And even then, it takes some time to cross that bridge. There are videos here that will help, but you will end of getting out of your comfort zone to address this.

The bottom line is that you are probably leaving chips on the table in certain spots and your range is too narrow in others.  Try and seek out videos that talk about realizing equity (and then act accordingly) while also reading a book on constructing ranges (Ed Millers 1% talks alot about this).

Then, enter 6max MTTs that will emphasize this even more.  But dont get frustrated.  You are going to learn some new skills and that takes time.

Thanks for the insight. Definitely not frustrated, I understand it’s part of the learning curve. I think you hit the nail on the head though and it was my suspicion that my range was getting too tight late middle stages. Since writing this post I went into HM and started reviewing 3 tournaments and it’s actually pretty obvious what’s going on. It was like clockwork, as soon as I got to the later stages I found I was folding hands pre-flop with no open that I was raising with earlier in the tournament….definitely missing quite a few spots. It’s funny though because in my mind I felt I was playing to win not just cash…….I guess stats and hand histories don’t lie!

some good advice here, but keep in mind that is a small sample, so I would not get TOO concerned.  But do take some time to look at your HHs and see if you are missing any spots.
