Hi,

I am keen to hear thoughts on what you would do in this spot. Btn v BB and I don't have a lot of reads on the BB – have not seen him XR a flop before.  What do you do when facing the XR AI?

  PokerStars – $1000+$50|2000/4000 Ante 500 NL – Holdem – 9 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

SB (SB): 144,019
BB (BB): 282,964
UTG (UTG): 59,730
UTG+1 (UTG+1): 118,753
UTG+2 (UTG+2): 215,377
MP (MP): 32,923
MP+1 (MP+1): 30,528
CO (CO): 66,632
Hero (BTN): 135,622

9 players post ante of 500, SB posts SB 2,000, BB posts BB 4,000

Dealt to Hero:

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 8,800, fold, BB calls 4,800

Flop (24,100, 2 players):

BB checks, Hero bets 18,316, BB raises to 273,664 and is all-in

What do you think his range is for the XR? I think any flush, flush draw, one pair with flush draw, 2 pair or the same hand.

Should we even be betting flop here? Obviously want protection from flush draws but is there an argument for checking behind as once he calls or rasies we're probably facing a range with really good equity or potentially way ahead.

I don't see him having a flush very often, if ever when taking this line. Sets kind of make sense, two pairs make sense, as does over pairs with FD's, or like A9/K9 with the A/K of spades, and QJ with a spade. 86 can do this as well, especialy if one of them is a spade. The more I think about it, some players might take this line why any 8s in their hand. Seems really spazzy though.

I don't think I have a fold here. Unless there is a history, and this guy is just pulling a really sick level, I just don't see why he would ever x/shove a made flush. Is there some kind of an ICM dynamic here? Bubble maybe?

We should be betting this flop. It seems you found a very outlying kind of scenario where you got put into a hurt locker, which shouldn't ever be happening. That being said, there aren't very many turn cards that scare us, so I don't exactly hate checking behind. I'm just more on the bet side of it.

Normally I would totally agree with 1Time, but I just got burned by this recently. Dont remember the exact hand, but it was kind of similar and I thought there was no way villain would ever do this with the nuts. Sure enough, he had it. The thing is players can also do this in reverse, especially in a situation like this, and this is a 1K. If you think about it, assuming villain has the flush, any other course of action where all the money goes in will look incredibly strong. Also villain doesnt know hero's hand is as strong as it is. But still, I would probably call too.

Thanks for the reply 1time. I don't think it makes sense with nut flush, but wouldn't a low flush do this? His range is pretty wide defending BB to btn and these days I think you can see people defending with any 2 suited. Even if it is just one spade are we happy calling off for our tournament here? Whatever he has I think he's got to have good equity at least. We were already ITM so no bubble dynamics. Whilst I had no specifec reads I hadn't seen anything spazzy before. If we fold we've got 24BB and maybe find a better spot?

Maybe he would play a flush this way, maybe he wouldn't. Maybe he would play a bare draw this way. Maybe two pair or a straight draw or a combo draw or just top pair. Think about how wide your range is for opening the button and how wide his is for calling from the BB. I admit a straight isn't the greatest bluff-catcher in the world, but what exactly would be your standards for calling here? And how often would you be folding to this shove?

This is certainly something you should think about before you bet, because you're going to get check-raised often on this texture. I'm not saying you should check, but the raise shouldn't come as a surprise, and if you are going to fold, then you probably shouldn't bet.

Hi Andrew, thank you for the response. I think you are spot on as the more I think about this hand the more I think my biggest mistake was giving no thought to what I would do to a shove when I bet. I was caught completely by surprise and had no idea what to do. I am not sure what I should call with. As played, what would you call with?

I folded becasue I thought he either has it or would have a good draw and my hand can not get any better… I think I made a mistake though – whether it was the fold or large bet on the flop.
