Consistently running into this problem...

Hi, everyone this is my first post here. I've been watching the videos and reading the articles and I keep running into a problem that is really confusing me on what to do in tournaments. So I normally play full tilt tourneys anywhere from $2-$10 and lately ive been trying to be on the tighter side in the early goings. This is mostly because the players are so crazy sometimes and will just give you chips if you wake up with a hand(something this site helped me realize). But i seem to be constantly running into problems when blinds are between 40/80 – 100/200. Essentially what ive been noticing is that i'll be tight in the early goings and by these blind levels in a tourney where you start with 1500, ill normally have like 1200-1700.

for example

 – i get a hand like AQ off or AJ suited in mid-late position with 40/80 blinds and a stack of 1300.

 – i raise to 200 and get flatted by a blind and one other limper

– flop comes something like  K 7 9 rainbow

– checked around to me and i c bet around 340 and get called by 1 or both of the other players

–  the turn is another blank and now the pot is just as big or larger than my stack and i basically just have high cards

this is where i have been getting really confused… should i have shoved on the flop if checked to me? am i waiting too long to start shoving? basically im just finding that im getting low in chips and will only get a couple of chances with good hands to earn chips but when they miss like the situation above im put in an awkward position, do i go all in with nothing but high cards or check fold and go into shove, fold mode with <10 bb.

Any help would be appreciated, thx.

Yeah those are tricky spots because of the 1500 starting stack.  When you have 3k starting chips and c-bet/fold then you still have a ~2.2k stack to work with.

In these shallower tournaments, if you get called by two players I'd probably NOT c-bet in the situations you described above because 340 is a big part of your stack and you just have to give up when they call.  If it's one player your c-bet is probably more like 200 and I'd go ahead and do it.

I think the problem is that if you find your self getting to 40/80 constantly with 1300 you might be just a little too tight early.  And if you're always c-betting into 2 players you might be c-betting too much.  I'd open up a little more early in these shallow tourneys because of what you describe, and i'd c-bet less to preserve my stack.

Hope this helps.

Just wait until you've got 20-25bb and start 3 bet shoving really wide.  Trying to play flops when you've got 1900 chips at 50/100 blinds can be really awkward, so I usually don't even bother doing it.

The structures on UB/AP, in particular, definitely put you in this situation.  You end up having to win a flip during the 50/100 level to stay alive and healthy in the tournament.

Or maybe I just lack patience…

Not really the answer you are looking for, but if your target buy-in is $2-10, I would strongly recommend playing on Stars. They have a TON of good guaranteed tournies in that range, and most of them start you with $3000 chips, which makes a huge difference.

In the 1500 tourneys it comes down to picking the right spots. I usually tend to limp and flat call small raises and out play everyone post flop until I can get a good stack size, then I will switch to aggression.  For the cost of 2.5x or 3x pre-flop raise and c-bet, you can get a few limps out of it instead.  If the table dynamics are there it is ok to limp and/or 2x raise, if you have a lot of loose players. Try and hit the flops cheap. IMO  Like Woopig mentioned PS has many more tourneys in your price range and most have 2000 or more starting stack.
