ANTE: 1000/2000/200

Villain: TAG. Doesn’t seem to get way out of line but a bit ago he made a big bluff and pot committed himself with nothing.
Me: TAGgy as well.

Stacks: I have 75k or so and Villain easily covers.

Pre-Flop: I have AJ and raise to 5k from UTG+1. V calls from UTG+2 and SB calls (SB is straight forward NIT).

POT= 19k
Flop: J 8 5
SB checks. I bet 8k. V thinks only a sec and raises to 20k. SB folds…is this an easy shove? easy call and re-evaluate? cant possibly fold here right?
Thanks much

I don’t think shove is an option, since villain is unlikely to raise a worse value hand like KJ, and there are really only two combos of KJ in villain’s range (KJcc and KJhh). I also don’t really think folding is an option, since villain can very easily raise hands like KQss and AQss here.

As long as we’re comfortable that villain’s cold-calling frequency in this spot is high enough that they can have more than just a couple of combos of flush/straight draws in addition to their 6 combos of sets, then I think calling and planning to call it off on any blank turn is probably a good way to go.

Felt like a shove to me at first but then I really looked at at what sort of equity he would have with draws or combo draws and I don’t think there’s much fold equity there. Calling is probably best. Unfortunately a lot of turn cards are going to hurt. Any K, Q, spade. Tens and nines aren’t great either. So about half the remaining deck is trouble. With 50k behind you’ll be ok if you have to lay it down though.

With 50K left and 59K in the pot, a check-shove won’t have any fold equity on the turn. Would you open-shove any turn? Would you check/fold any spade?

The raise smells a lot like a flush draw to me.. May be T9ss or some gutshot with flush draw.. I think I will call this raise and evaluate on the turn… Anything that completes a straight or a flush, I am going to be really wary about.

I think check-folding a spade is reasonable. I strongly dislike the idea of open-shoving turn though, that just gets villain to call with all their sets and fold their flush draws.

The more I think about it, the less I like this spot. Do we think villain can flat QQ-AA preflop here? What’s their frequency of flatting 88/55? 55 would probably be a not-great flat here.

They have very few bluff combos in their range, but very few value combos too. If we had AhJh and the ability to turn a flush draw, I think calling becomes better, but the more I think about it, the less I like the spot. If they can have QQ-AA some % then all of a sudden value hands are starting to overtake bluffs in their range pretty significantly – it’s still tough to put more than about 3-4 combos of spades in their range, and most of those have extra equity on top of the naked flush draw.

We don’t have to worry too much about being exploitable here since we have plenty of non-folding hands versus this raise (spades+overcards, sets, overpairs), but I’m starting to think AdJd is a hand that might actually end up being best used as the top of our bet-folding range on this flop. The more villain starts to flat QQ-AA, the more I think checking the flop is an option, too.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. It was a tough spot.

In the moment, I put him on 55, 88, a few combo-draws, and I thought he’d do this with AJ as well. So in my mind I was either way behind, tied, or facing a draw, which led me to conclude that I should go AI here as it served 2 purposes

– could get him to fold AJ (worst case we chop)

– makes him pay for the draw he is ON

Tough part was, that if I was wrong t is pretty much my tournament life. In hindsight I like the chk call best based on all of your thinking. The only thing though is that the AJ has as much possibility as either of the sets (55,88) and maybe more as 55 seems bad. So do I really want to give him an opportunity to out play me in position with AJ on the turn?
