Hey guys,

This is my first ever strategy post about poker, so hopefully I give enough/correct information. I have been playing some low stakes (1c/2c) zoom poker to work on my deep stack play. Being zoom, I don’t have any reads on the players

Pre-Flop – I think calling with 108o getting 5:1 multi-way is fine

Flop – When the original raiser continues into 3 people, I discount all/most of their air hands, I put the caller in MP on a draw of some sort and with the odds I’m getting again on the flop I feel I can continue with my bottom pair and gut-shot which also has a club blocker

Turn – When the turn is an 8 which gives me trips and the opener bets again and is once again called by MP again, I feel as though I’m up against a big hand by one of the two villians (QQ,99, J10 – is this to tight/narrow?)

River- When the river brings the 3 of spades, I feel this is a blank, unless someone was holding J10s  and was holding a monster the whole time, I made the call on the river hoping villian would turn over a KQ or AQ which is probably only a small part of their range here on the river after betting three streets?

I never knew where I was in this hand and being multi way made it harder for me. On the turn I had moved my bet slider to all in but felt it would have been a punt so decided to call instead

Thoughts? Guidance? Please

Pre-flop is close but probably a fold if you aren’t comfortable playing multi-way pots. Yes, you’re getting good odds, but you’re also up against multiple opponents. 5:1 in a heads up pot is not the same as 5:1 in a four-way pot.

It’s good hand reading on your part to recognize the strength of the pre-flop raiser’s flop bet, and I think that’s a good reason to just let your hand go on the flop. You say you’re getting good odds, but what exactly do you think you’re drawing to? Is a T a good turn card for you? What about the Jc? Even when you hit one of the best possible turn cards, you still couldn’t feel too confident in your hand.

Against stronger players, I’d agree with your hesitation on the turn. My guess is that 1c/2c players will overvalue enough draws/one-pair hands than you can just jam turn. I’d call river for the same reason.

Nice post, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Andrew, During the hand I didn’t know what cards I wanted to see on the turn, so yes probably a fold on the flop or perhaps even pre. Calling in a tournament with this hand with those odds pre-flop more acceptable? (If I had say 50+BB)

Why would it be different in a tournament?

Just seems as though in a lot of the videos I’ve watched, especially videos that include a pro going over a HH of someone else, they are critical of someone folding pre flop in the BB with “playable” hands when getting good odds.

In a tournament you only have so many hands to chip up. Where is in a cash game you have unlimited hands to find a better spot?

Again, getting big odds in a HU pot is very different from getting them in a four-way pot. I mean, if each of you had an equal chance of winning the pot, you’d only have a 25% chance of winning (in a HU pot it would be 50%), so getting 5:1 is barely enough to make up for that anyway. Then factor in that your chances of winning aren’t as good as everyone else’s, because your position is bad and your hand doesn’t play well multi-way.

In a tournament you only have so many hands to chip up. Where is in a cash game you have unlimited hands to find a better spot?”

This is a common misunderstanding. The fact that you feel pressure to get more chips doesn’t change the math. Calling is either profitable or it isn’t. If it is profitable, there’s no reason to fold and wait for a better spot in a cash game. If it isn’t, then it isn’t going to help you “chip up” in a tournament.

Thanks Andrew, yeh I think I’m putting my self into some tough spots in these multi way pots, so it’s something I need to be careful of
