First, my apologies as this is both my first strategy post, and I'm typing it from a different computer than I play on, so….my hand histories are inexact, but they don't need to be.

Playing in the $12, $1500GTD on Bovada, and had about an average stack once we got in to the money.  Just past the bubble, called a really loose guys shove with 7s, lost to Q9.  As a result, I was hovering at about 7BB.  For about 3-4 orbits, I shoved 4-5 times, and never got called, so I was essentially maintaining my stack, but then the blinds went up…you know the deal.

To my question.  Still had 5BBs left when I was in the SB.  On the previous hand, my spazzy friend who I lost to had just lost a massive pot, and I figured he was possibly going to shove light.  I had 79dd in the SB, and he shoved.  Should I call there?  He still had a slightly larger stack than I had, so it was my tournament life.

I ended up folding (he ran in to 77 again, and lost…a 9 came on the river), and said that I would be shoving with any face card if unopened to me on the button as I'd at least have (a little) fold equity.  I got my wish, shoved with J3, and got called by AK.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

With 5bb i think you gota just get in here to be honest. You got flush, straight draws or you could pair up and whats to say you dont get 72 2 hands in a row if you fold the sb and then you got 3/4 bb in mp and your gettin called by everyone.

Kenny

i would call with suited connectors here, i prefer hands like this in this spot as opposed to high cards but i would go with whatever presents at this stage.

good luck at the tables

Thanks for the replies, guys.  Good learning experience for me right now.  Would have really loved a double, and would have gotten it to get back in to contention.

79s is a very sexy hand. However, I think it would be unwise to call with this hand. How well does it play against any two cards? Not too well and even if villain is shoving wide we are behind equity wise lots of the time.

We should be focused on preserving our tourney life. The very next hand we are on the button and I like shOving any two cards. A double up or two and we are back in it and you did mention the table has been folding to your shoves. There is a better spot to take here, calling is way too weak.

fair comment about waiting for the button and shoving.

not too sure about the percentage of hands your opponent is opening. according to poker stove (these numbers are rounded up and down) against 22+ our equity is 35%/65%. against 40% of hands we are 38%/62%. against 50% we are 40%/60%, against 100% we are 49%/51%.

we all have different styles of play so there isn't really an absolute right or wrong. when i get to 5BB my tournament life is not really important to me, doubling up multiple times is my priority and i will (have to) take the short side of equity equasions. if i go heads up with a pair against an over pair i am a 20%/80% dog so 79s would be my prefered choice in the situation you described.

i think i am guilty of obsessing too much about my tournament life, i find myself aiming to get in the money and never really get a big stack built up and have a chance to make a run for the top three places

if any of you newer members are interested in getting a study group together or discussing hand histories or whatever please let me know, we have a lot to learn and i think pooling our thoughts would be worth the effort

good luck

I don’t think I would call in that spot with 97. Your fold is OK.

When you get down to 5bb or less, you actually need to be a bit tighter than most people think, because you lack fold equity.

The J3 shove may not be optimal because the big blind is going to be priced in to call very wide. I’d rather shove something that has more equity.

The M chart posted by Chris Moon (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B79VmReXwhagc1FMQVNzWVYxajA/edit?pli=1) says J3o is a fold from the button. That said, I don't hate shoving any two from the button, depending on the blinds' stack sizes.
