This is a two day tourneament with a $200k guarantee and we are nearing the end of the first day. Blinds 1/2k and I have 160k. UTG, active player with approx 75k,raises to 6k.  I am on the button with A10os.  I debate all 3 of my options but ultimately decide to flat.  Flop comes 1084 rainbow.  He bets 8k, I raise it to 20 and he jams.  He did seem to have a preflop sizing tell.  I had seen him raise 5-6x with KK and AK.  Most of his 3x hands were marginal to weak (A5os, J10os, etc.).  One of my friends stated that he should always have me beat here as played.  I ultimately called and he turned over 99.  The play worked out well but I am unsure if a call was correct.

Pre-flop I would fold A10os to an UTG raise. Against a normal villain UTG raise you are likely either dominated (AJ, AQ, AK, 10, JJ, QQ, KK, AA) or flipping a pair (99 or lower). At best you are a slight favorite (KQ, KJ, QJ). Even if villain is a complete maniac, do you think he is raising UTG with two unpaired cards below a 10? If you were suited I could see maybe making the call. If you were the BB I could see making the call.

On the flop I would probably call. Yes you have an overpair to the board, but villain showed strength preflop so I’d want to pot control here. I suppose if villain’s aggression also includes 100% c-betting you can make an argument for a re-raise, but the fact that he is UTG makes me lean toward a call.

But once he 4-bets jams, I would fold. You started the hand with a lot of chips. Do you really want to put your entire tournament at risk on one pair to a player who has shown this much strength? In this case it worked, but I think against most opponents you would be beat as played.

I will say that his bet sizing is really strange. If he is consistently raising 3x-6x I would wait for something better than A10os to go to war with. Other things that it would be helpful to know. Is he just aggro pre-flop or is he equally aggro at every street? Is he aggressive from early position as well as late position or is he mostly aggro in middle and late position given that this hand he is UTG? Are you in the money yet?

I get that he is aggressive and you want to play back against him, but I’m not sure you had the hand to do so pre-flop. Post-flop I think there is a case to be made for staying in the hand, but I would have preferred a more pot controlled approach rather than re-raising him (although maybe he doesn’t allow you to keep it small on the turn or river). Unless he is jamming every hand he gets involved in, I think this was too big a pot to commit to with A10os.

I’m folding ATo here pre no doubt. Never calling…well, never say never. I am very rarely calling. If I am playing the hand at all, I am 3betting here a linear range because I think villain is more likely to call than 4bet. ATs I might play on the Button as a call, but it is for the draw potential rather than value from an A high flop. In fact, there is more value on a 10 high flop than an Ace high flop.

As played, I guess I am calling 2 streets max here.

Defo not 3betting his cbet here. What is the purpose? Cant get any better hands to fold or many worse to call.

Agree with folding pre. If you believe V’s range is capped because he didn’t 5x it, then I’d 3-bet before I would call. I don’t get the reason for raising flop if you aren’t going to feel comfortable facing a shove. What were you hoping would happen?

My friends and I have had a number of conversations about A10os and the consensus is that we typically want to avoid calling raises or opening in ep with it. My first instinct was to fold pre.  Andrew I agree with your point about what my plan was when raising his bet on the flop.  I don’t think the possibility of him jamming crossed my mind and that is a big mistake.  I think many competent players can put me in some gross spots when I do that.

Fortunately even though I misplayed the hand I was able to ship this tourney and cash for $37K!  I really do appreciate all of your feedback and your coaching videos Andrew.  I think I was able to limit my mistakes over the two days.

I’m most likely folding pre, depending on what I thought of the initial raiser I will mix in some 3bets.  I just feel A10os is going to be in rough shape against a competent UTG raiser.  I know I wouldn’t be feeling to confident when I get jammed on and would find a fold given the stack sizes.  I guess ultimately it depends on what you feel the villians jamming range is here?
