Hey, playing in local pub league last night, was going ok when a super gag with big stack got moved to the table a few spots after me. From what I’ve played with him before, he likes to think he’s creative, but just seems to push when he hits anything, he had a lot of chips at the time, I had just over 15k, even though it’s only 15 bb it’s probably still better than avg stack by a few thousand and or so. Blinds are going up to 1/2k in 4 min.

Blinds are 500/1000, I’m in the bb, he min raises from mp1 to 2000, fold to me, I call with QJhh.

Flop comes 4, 9, 10, rainbow with one heart.

I raise to 1500, he shoves.

I am thinking for a while, and I feel like he is on a pair most of the time, like i said, he thinks he’s creative, and would probably flat or min raise two pair/set/straight for value, and his stack is easily 35-40k, I have 11 left after my bet, with the type of player he was I gave him some air in his range too. I really put him on k 10, a10, even worse like 45s, etc.
With that, I gave myself 8outs for the open ender, plus 6 outs for qj, giving me better than 50% equity, correct?
So I called.

Was my thought process flawed at all? Was it a good call? Was I convincing myself his range was weak when I hadn’t played a huge amount with this guy?

I would consider 3b shoving over his raise depending on how light you think he opens with a big stack and how loose/tight he will call off. It is usually a 3b shove over any decent reg's MP open. Anyway, I don't mind a call here as much as some other players do. Once we see the flop, I think we are always committed (even if he open shoves). C/r shoving is standard, but you can't go wrong with bet/calling flop. C/raising allows us to make more money when he cb's air and folds to a raise. Leading does not allow the flop to check through so you can shove any turn. Depending on how often he checks back or cb's and how he will react to a donk lead could change which play is most profitable. Overall, I prefer shoving preflop and c/r shoving flop as played.
