This was in a $5 MTT SNG on acr. As soon as 6 people register, these things fire up and late reg goes for maybe 30 minutes. This was on a Friday or Saturday evening, and the field was probably 50 people.

10/20 1500 chips, 9 handed

Folds to the cutoff who opens to 80. I call on the button with 5s4s. blinds fold.

(190) As 9c 4h
Co bets 190. I call.

(570) As 9c 4h 4d
Check. Check.

(570) As 9c 4h 4d Ad

Co bets 230, I shove 1230. Co calls.

Yes, too thin. Also fold pre-flop, fold flop, and bet turn.

Dammit, Andrew! Thanks 🙂

I agree on the preflop fold. I’ve been feeling way too splashy lately, which I think is ever more apparent by my flop call. What am I gonna do, get him to fold AT+ when I turn a draw? Boo bad assumptions.

Could you elaborate on betting turn? I thought cutoff could/would have a lot of air or pocket pairs that gave up. I didn’t expect much Ax, so I thought my targets were the kinds of hands that will call one bet, but not two.

I want to take what you and everyone else says as fact and truth, and often do, but then the opponent’s I play do weird things that don’t at first glance seem to fit in with the assumptions you and others face. For instance, I don’t think I had any hands on this individual, and they bet/called off with TT! I thought the smaller sizing they made was so they wouldn’t have to check/call a larger bet when they’re beat, but bet/calling it off there seems terrible.

All I can tell you is how to play against an unknown. If you’re really confident that his turn check means he doesn’t have an Ace, then of course your line is perfect. But he really should check-call some Aces, and he really shouldn’t put any more money into the pot with anything less after you call the flop.

All I can tell you is how to play against an unknown.” < —- This is something I needed to remember when reading your replies. The questions I’m asking are making a lot of assumptions.

I’ve been playing a lot of strategy board games lately (Ticket to Ride, Catan, Forbidden Island) and it’s made me think about poker more. There are strategically right and wrong or many right and many wrong choices a lot of the time, but then you can shift all of that based on how your opponent is playing. It’s a lot to think about and I seem to routinely forget and remember different important pieces of information the longer I’ve been this recreational through winning through losing player.

In Ticket to Ride, if I see my girlfriend trying to build a train line while ignoring the fact that I’m about to play my last two turns because I’ve run out of trains, I won’t bother worrying about blocking her. But if she realizes I have too few trains for her to complete the line in time, and she goes to block me, I’ll focus more on high point areas that are disconnected just to end the game quickly. I feel like you’d have good board game rec’s, Andrew. Please share if you do.
