Good evening TPE,
Here is a hand from a $5 knockout smaller MTT of about 60 entires that I played a few days ago and had meant to ask about. We are progressing through the midgame with about 15 players remaining at this point. The villain, lwoods, played 32/13/3.0 after about 60 hands, limping 14, stealing 53, restealing 0, no number for Cbet. He's actually a bit tough to put on a playing style but he definitely stays active.
When I watched this hand after the tourney was over, I had to rub my eyes and watch it again, because I can't believe I played it this way. I don't even remember actually having done this .. but obviously I had.
Not converting well, so I'll do the best I can to post all the information:
Blinds: 80/400/800
Seat 1: 10,216
Seat 2: 11,453
Seat 3: 55,059
Seat 4: lwoods (SB) 8,030
Seat 5: Hero (BB) 7,189
Hole cards: 6 J
3 folds, lwoods calls 400, Hero checks.
Flop: 6 5 K
(t2,000)
lwoods bets 3,255
This was a large bet, and I found it suspicious. His range for limping is unpredictable, but pretty wide. His range for betting over1.5X the pot is .. odd? It looks like he really wants me to fold. I could very easily have him beat and I do need to double up soon here. I should probably just shove to take it down, or if he calls with a draw or a pair maybe I'll double up, right?
Well that's not what I did.
Hero calls 3,255
I'm honestly not sure why I would call almost half my stack instead of shoving. I must have been thrown off guard by this situation.
Turn: J
(t8,510)
lwoods checks
Well I got lucky with this turn and the pot should basically be mine. But unfortunately I made another poor decision.
Hero checks
This was bad, wasn't it? I should be taking this down and honestly cannot think of why I did this. I think I was trying to under rep, expecting lwoods to make a move on the river.
River: 5
There is my punishment.
lwoods checks, Hero checks.
lwoods shows: 2 5
My main goal in posting this hand is to make sure I understand what I should have done. I believe I should have shoved on the flop, but considering that I didn't, I should have shoved on the turn. Is this correct? I would have been going for value both times. As it turns out I would have either made the villain fold or would have simply gotten sucked out, no big deal. It looks though that my call on the flop and check on the turn allowed this hand to get away from me and I was down to a weak stack right when things were getting serious in the tourney.

Options are:
1) Shove preflop. J6 is not a great hand but SB limper is probably even weaker than J high and I'm certain most players would simply shove preflop themselves with around 10bbs expecting to be called pretty wide.
2) Flop: You can fold or go all-in. Personally, I probably go with it as villain would probably bet normally with top pair or better to give the illusion of not being committed. Once he has bet 3255 from a stack of 7600 I don't think he has an option to fold anyway so end result I think is always going to be the same.
3) Turn – definitely go all-in. Villain is still likely pot committed. No real need to under-rep anything as you're going to get his stack anyway even if he only has a flush draw.
