Hi,
I am having trouble with my bluffs.
I am on a pretty bad down swing atm and after reviewing my hand histories have noticed the following move is loosing me a lot of chips.
My VPIP is 20%
The move I get in trouble with is as follows:
- Doesn't seem to matter whether or not I am in position.
- Usually vs 2-3 opponents.
- I have a good hand (20% range) and open with a 2.5X raise pre-flop (pretty standard for me unless I am short stacked, then it's a min raise).
- I miss the flop (sometimes I make middle pair but it's important to note I could be getting beat with what's out there).
- I know my stats are telling the other players I could have the best hand given what I'm betting into.
- Everyone checks round to me and I CBet (30-75% of the pot depending on stack sizes). Sometimes I also check the flop and bet the turn if it checks round to me again.
- Then I get re-raised (usually 2X).
- Most of the time I fold but sometimes I 2X re-raise again or shove only to find my opponent is slow playing something, usually 2 pair or a set. When I get called on my re-raise I shove the river, again I get smashed.
What am I doing wrong? This move used to work for me all the time…

I think I also find myself in those spots like everyone. I learnt not to go too crazy especially early stages.
I have AK open 2.5x, three way pot, I am in position. check, check. I would bet around 3/1 to see whats up. Most of the time, it turns into a two way pot. If the turn doesnt bring me anything, it goes check, check.
I mean I was being too aggressive in these spots, but now I am trying to play small ball. Im always keeping the pot small if I believe the villain is ahead.
Obviously, depending on the way the opponent plays, you can always use scare cards to bluff.
Getting to the minraise thing. When you cbet and your opponent minraises, that usually means the opponent hit top pair or has overpair and trying to get as much value as he can to compensate for the risk that his hand will be beat on later streets.
In these kind of spots, I would call/reraise depending on the strength of my draws/outs.
Also, when someone cbets me and I know his cbet percentage is high and especially if he always cbets the same amount, then I minraise him regardless of my hand. After a 6-7 sec tank, I get the fold.
So if you believe that person knows that, just reraise him again. The chances are you will get the fold. But, there is no need to shove or go crazy. Keep it manageble. Also, I dont think there is any need to do this at the early stages of a tournament.
