Hot $22 on Stars. Down to last 2 tables, Hero 5/17, with a lot of short stacks on both tables. $5k for 1st, $130 for 17th.

PokerStars – 17500/35000 Ante 4250 NL – Holdem – 8 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

MP: 38.66 BB (VPIP: 21.95, PFR: 21.62, 3Bet Preflop: 7.14, Hands: 41)
MP+1: 4.91 BB (VPIP: 16.28, PFR: 13.16, 3Bet Preflop: 12.50, Hands: 43)
CO: 11.74 BB (VPIP: 16.07, PFR: 16.98, 3Bet Preflop: 5.26, Hands: 56)
BTN: 5.9 BB (VPIP: 15.50, PFR: 9.68, 3Bet Preflop: 6.52, Hands: 129)
SB: 26.43 BB (VPIP: 20.97, PFR: 15.25, 3Bet Preflop: 4.35, Hands: 63)
Hero (BB): 33.83 BB
UTG: 7.15 BB (VPIP: 9.09, PFR: 11.11, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 11)
UTG+1: 14.2 BB (VPIP: 23.94, PFR: 16.21, 3Bet Preflop: 7.69, Hands: 262)

8 players post ante of 0.12 BB, SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 2.47 BB) Hero has 4heart 8club

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, SB calls 0.5 BB, Hero checks

Flop: (2.97 BB, 2 players) 4spade 9heart Kspade
SB bets 1.63 BB, Hero calls 1.63 BB

Flopped third pair, I don’t see much reason to check-raising , flat calling around 90% of times here.

Turn: (6.24 BB, 2 players) 4club
SB bets 3.43 BB, Hero raises to 9 BB, SB calls 5.57 BB

Feels like perfect turn for me. With trip fours, I expect myself to have the nuts. Time to get a value.

Villain was some sort of reg. I feel like his range would contain a mix of complete garbage hands & very strong hands.

I decided to check-raise as any spade on the river would probably kill the action.

River: (24.24 BB, 2 players) Aheart
SB checks, Hero bets 22.08 BB and is all-in, SB calls 14.68 BB and is all-in

River is a great card. If he was bluffing 2 streets with A high(not very likely though), he gets there. With low SPR, he might call my shove with strong K as well.

Hero shows 4heart 8club (Three of a Kind, Fours)
(Pre 13%, Flop 0.1%, Turn 2%)
SB shows 9spade 9club (Full House, Nines full of Fours)
(Pre 87%, Flop 99.9%, Turn 98%)
SB wins 53.59 BB

I’m curious on your opinions about this hand. Should I play this hand differently considering ICM? Had I won this hand, I would be a chip leader and I would book a ticket to final table. However there was plenty, plenty of shorter stacks. When I lost this hand, I was still 11/17 (with 9BB).

I like it, I think your raise on the turn is well sized and there’s really no option other than shoving the river.

Sometimes with turned trips it is really hard to rep enough bluffs to make raising great, but in this case I think there’s enough ICM pressure and potential draws to make your range more than wide enough.

I feel like his range would contain a mix of complete garbage hands & very strong hands.” I don’t think V’s range should be polarized, and if it is in fact polarized then you probably don’t want to raise trips 8 kicker. You’ll force out all of his bluffs and only get action from his best hands, which is a fairly narrow range that some portion of which has you crushed. As much as a bad river may kill your action it also gives villain a great spot to 3 barrel bluff if they are so inclined.

Just unlucky to run into a better hand this late in the tourney, I like how you played it.

I don’t think there’s anything you could do differently here at all. Do you want to raise pre? Fold flop? Flat-call turn? Check behind river? None of those seem good. The only one that seems slightly valid is calling turn, but that’s only because villain’s betting range on that turn card should be somewhat polarized, but in reality it most likely isn’t, since many villains will just barrel Kx aimlessly.

He’s the one under substantial ICM pressure here, not you. If anything, I think the more appropriate question is how we should be building bluffing ranges in this spot, given that we have a great opportunity to put villain’s Kx hands under great pressure on turn.

Lol, should is a funny word because we both agree that villain should be polarized here, but when I said ‘I don’t think V should be polarized’ what I meant was “I see regs barrel Kx here all day every day.”
