I have found this to be a weaker than average part of my game. When i do manage to build a big stack, i find i keep hold of it very rarely and usually slip back down to average (where i am most comfortable). Playing like this tends to mean that if i do make it deep i am the one playing catchup rather than the one dictating the play. With a bit of guidance and advice improving this aspect of my game could help improve me as a player overall. Does anyone have any advice on how to play when you have a big stack?

Probably the biggest mistake most people make is assuming that having a big stack means you have to suddenly play really differently. Effective stacks are what matter, so if everyone else at the table has 50bb it doesn’t matter much if you have 51bb or 100bb, assuming you’re not at the final table or in the late stages.

The only thing that does change a little is your ability to put a little more pressure on those players who are overly concerned with their ‘tournament life’, so if you do spot anyone who is particularly tight then it might be worth considering bluffing a little more often against them.

Generally though, if you let the fact that you have a big stack convince you that you suddenly have to transform your game, you’re probably doing more harm than good. There’s a pretty good chance that’s why your big stack suddenly tends to disappear – that, plus the simple reality that variance will often make maintaining a big stack for a long time really difficult anyway.
