 Hi All,

I’m new to the site and am half way through the first video series in the starter course. I have a question about, Bigdogpckt5’s and KidCardiff6 109r Dual Live Sweat (Part 4). At about 10:05 Bigdogpckt5’s mentions that opening back to back is a good thing. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind this?

I would have posted this as a video comment but as the series is almost 4 years old I figured I wouldn’t get a response.

Thanks in advance.

It’s true that people don’t respond to comments in older videos as often as newer ones. Linking to it here wouldn’t hurt.

If he means opening consecutive hands, I would say that a tighter range in the second hand makes sense because you’re less likely to be believed. I suspect it could be a reference to something else however.

Yeah I think he’s just implying that psychologically your opponents are likely to think “gee, he opened one hand, what are the odds that he would be raising a second time in a row without a big hand?”

I wouldn’t take this idea too far, but it’s probably not completely irrelevant either…

Opening back to back isn’t inherently a good thing or a bad thing. Your opponents’ perception of your range will change depending on the circumstances, but that doesn’t mean much as long as you’re adapting to it correctly. In this particular instance it might have been a good thing for Bigdog to do based on the spot, but that doesn’t mean it’s something everyone should do more often.

If you have a fairly tight table image, opening back to back is likely to look super strong, while if you’re opening 5 hands an orbit, it means virtually nothing. Context is everything.
