Being card dead in tourneys

I tend to play tournies very tight early and open it up as the blinds go up.  Lately, I have had a run of getting absolutely nothing during this period to double up with.  I find myself with 20 bbs or less quickly.  I find a spot to shove and get called and out.  What if anything do you guys suggest in these spots?  Thanks

I think a lot of players experience this…I know I do.

I feel your pain but there’s not much you can do here.  Find a +EV spot to shove and hope to win it.

Thats about all you can do. I notice that BigDog says he is always looking for a spot or two each orbit to steal the blinds to keep his stack up. Lately I have started looking after a few orbits for targets to take some shots at with marginal hands.  If you can do it successifully it has a couple +EV aspects to it. First, you arent blinding down but the second is you dont look like a NIT. This is huge because you want some people to play pots with you when you do have a monster.  I know before everyhand I decide to play after someone has already acted I think about what I know about this player and I consider their stats.  This is more important to me in most situation rather than my hand strength.  So we simply cant always rely on getting hands and when we do we need to get action there is were I think these two schools of thought seem to contrast. Because we cant get action if we are perceived as a rock and I simply dont want to wait for hands all day blind down to nothing catch a good hand get called by 2 big stacks and its game over. I think in a SNG you can play this way and it will be profitable but not in an MTT we have to look for spots and exploit them until we actually can rely on a hand. Just my 2 cents.. I could be way off here.

I think you’re exactly right.  Notice i said +EV spot, not +EV cards.  There are going to be may situations where opening is +EV regardless of what you have and being able to steal effectively will keep you afloat + provide the image you need for when you actually get a hand.

Exactly. If you don’t get the cards, find the spots.

Find a hand where a couple loose passives have already entered and shiiiiiiip it. It’ll work such a high percentage of the time when you combine how often they fold with how often you may still outflop someone if they call you.

Hopefully you have tight players to your left and can pilfer their blinds to stay afloat.

It’s not like the players who have high profit simply get better cards all the time than the rest of us.

Dont be afraid to open hands in the late positions  and alot of times players will fold and you ship the blinds and  if you get a call often times a c-bet takes it down on the flop…obv dont do it every single orbit from all three late positions then ppl will start 3betting you relentlessly, and then you wont have a clue on there range and your SOL in tight spots against solid players
