Day 2 of main event in Malta with huge prize pool of 900,000.

Far away from the money.Blinds are 1000/2000 and Hero has 38000 chips and holds KQ off on button.

Have no reads as I am not the hero.

A short stack shoves for 13000 from early position and it is folded around to hero.

What is the best play here?

I’d jam unless I had a good reason not to (ie you have reason to think this player is jamming a very tight range). You certainly ought to be ahead of his range for jamming 6.5 blinds from EP.

Thanks Andrew, ye I think you are right in what you say. A friend of mine said he wouldn’t call here as it is going to damage his stack if he loses and there is no reason to get involved in this hand. He reckons the gain if he wins the hand is not worth the risk. It is true that KQo is going to be a dog here.

Well if you think you’re going to be a dog there’s no reason to call.

I’d ask your friend what does “no reason to get involved” mean? What about wanting to win chips, isn’t that a good reason? I mean, calling with KK could damage your stack to, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

I meant that I would be a dog against his range if his range was say 25% of hands. I didn’t check out the figures against a bigger range than this.

As regarding my friends view that the hero shouldn’t get involved, he means that if you lose the hand , well you are down to 12 big blinds and your options are now limited. I did say to him ” with that attitude, I;m surprised you chance getting out of bed in the morning”

HRC says UTG should jam 25.8% {25.8%, 22+ A2s+ A7o+ A5o K6s+ KTo+ Q8s+ QJo J8s+ T8s+ 98s } and you should jam 14.3% {14.3%, 44+ A7s+ A5s A9o+ KTs+ KQo QJs }. That assumes a 9-handed table with a 300 ante and both blinds cover you.

In practice I think many people jam wider in his spot because they are about to go through the blinds.

Edit: This also assumes some value in survival. I set the payouts at 95% for 1st, 5% for second, so it’s not quite a strict cEV calculation.
