Hi all hope everyone had a good Christmas and has a great new year.

So I was just wondering if anyone has any decent guidelines regarding managing bankroll when playing satellites…

I’m not playing perfect br management and I’m usually always ‘taking shots’ but making it a new years resolution to manage my br somewhat decently.

Thanks in advance for any replies

I think it is less complicated than you think. If you have a job and play poker in your free time, figure out what your expenses are to live your life the way you want. Then see what is left over. From the amount that is left over decide what portion of that money goes to poker. Bam, you have your bankroll. Then don’t deviate.

If poker is your job then I would say you have to ask yourself if you go on a downswing are the satellites so big that it puts you underwater financially.

It seems to me that if you are honest with yourself financially then your bankroll sizing becomes obvious. The key is to be honest and responsible when you look in the mirror. Then once you set a bankroll … DO … NOT … DEVIATE. No exceptions. No rationalizing. No deviating.

I think making the road map is easy. The discipline is what is more difficult.

I am not sure I am thinking about this correctly, but one way to think about satellites is this:

Assume you are playing a $100 sat to a $1000 event.  Well, then you are essentially playing a $100 tournament with 10x the entrants as there will be in the big event.  The bankroll for a $100 tournament is not a constant number.  The bigger the field the less likely you will produce a big return.

In the back of my mind, there is something about the square root of the number of players.  If you are playing a $100 that has 10x the number of players you’d usually play, you would then need about 3.15 times the bankroll you would need for a normal $100 buy in.   Not sure if that is correct, but intuitively it seems right.

OK, that was far off base.  Thinking about the returns you will get from a $100 Sat, 10-1.  You will ‘cash; about 1.5% of the time.  When you do cash, it will usually be about 20x your satellite entry.  This is nothing like what I described above.

Ryan LaPlante made a visit to a local poker discussion group yesterday, and mentioned that satellites do have a huge amount of variance, assuming you are going to play the target event and won’t sell any action.

3x might be the increase in variance, I think that is the right ballpark.
