Hey guys. I am looking for a little insight into how to balance building a roll and taking some profit. I have set a goal for myself to build my roll to where i feel comfortable playing a 20 to 25 dollar avg. buy in before I start taking a steady draw from my bankroll. When I say “feel comfortable” I mean not only the amount of money in my roll but my perception of my ability to compete at those stakes. I have a long way to go in both aspects but I was still hoping to maybe get some thoughts or ideas on how some of you have dealt with or are dealing with this dynamic of bankroll management. I guess to simplify, is it better to take a decent amount of profit along the way in order to force myself to spend more time at various stakes or to push ahead as quickly as possible?
Tough question to answer really without knowing your own personal finances or your long term goals from poker. What stakes are you eventually looking to play? Do you need cash asap?
I'll relate my story so you can get a sense for what someone who was wondering the same thing a few years ago did.
When I started playing I had a steady income from my day job so I wasn't playing for immediate cash generating purposes. My goal was to become a regular in the ~$109/~$162 MTTs. I started grinding 4/180s, 10/180s (before they had 12/180s), 45s, and the $10 and $20 MTTs. I was able to turn my ~$500 to ~$4000 over a few months of grinding this schedule.
Then, I took a shot at the ps 50/50 (what is now the $70k) and won it for 13k. That nearly quadrupled my BR overnight. I think I took out ~$1k or so as a gift to my wife who had been very supportive of my time consuming hobby. But I left the rest in because I wanted to become a regular in the higher buyin tournies. I think if I had started drawing out then it would have taken me a lot longer to get there. Taking out 2k of a 15k roll is pretty significant if you are trying to move up. If you dont' care and want to stay in the ~$50 ABI there's nothing wrong with that and you can do it . But if you want to become a higher stake player my advice would be to keep it in there until you can play whatever level you are comfortable with overrolled. Because then you can take out monthly without impacting your ABI too significantly.
As a side note, through combination of necessary withdrawals (work circumstances change) and downswing i'm back to rebuilding and I have no intention of withdrawing until I can comfortably play the nightly 100k on 300 ABI. Unless i absolutely need the money I think it's better left in my account to help me generate bigger income eventually from the higher stakes games.
Thanks for the advice Ron. I am currently trying to build a career in real estate as well as going back to school so I can surely use some extra income. My long term goal in poker is to play at the highest stakes I can profitably play at. My short term goal is to build my roll up to somewhere in the neighborhood of 6k at which point I believe I can play a steady schedule of 11 to 33 dollar buy in tourneys and learn to compete at those levels before moving up. So I am not too concerned with taking profit until I am rolled for the 11 to 33 dollar tournaments I feel I need to be playing. With that being said I still have a heck of a lot of work to do on my MTT game and the process in getting to the 6k is going to be arduous at the least on my current roll.
Not only is it ok, but it's recommended. Your average buyin should be approximately Roll/250. But you should definitely mix in some shots. With 4k I think you should play the $55 a few times a week and even play a 109 once in a while, as long as you are supplementing enough $4 and $10 MTT to keep your ABI around $16.

I think buy-ins and br management have a lot of factors involved.
1. If you get low can you add funds? If so, your “true” BR may not always be what's already sitting online
2. Field size of MTT's – playing micros with 2,000 runners is much different than playing on a smaller site like UB where the same $5 MTT's fetch 240 runners.
3. Turbos vs. Non-Turbos
4. Rebuys/Cubed vs. Freezeouts
I think you can get away with a 100 BI roll easily if you're playing medium field freezeouts. You probably need 150-200 or more if you play huge field events, rebuys, etc.
Personally I do take shots occasionally and those are when I see guaranteed prize pool events with an overlay. Other than that I'm remaining pretty disciplined.
And finally you need to ask yourself if you'll play your normal game if you take a shot or if you think you'll play scared money and try for a min cash. If you think you'll play passively because you're going outside your comfort zone, don't do it. That's one reason why the Sunday Million has so much dead money.

i would grind the 4.40 180 mans, mix in 6.50 45 mans when you reach 650$
I'm really interested to grind these. Because these are not turbos.
I found some articles and they recommend 200 buy in.
What you think 100-150 would be enough?'
Thanks
If you are even a decent player than I think you would def be fine with 100 BI's for the $4.40 180 mans IMO FWIW…easily crushable and could not see any good player going on a MASSIVE downswing in these unless extremely unlucky for a drastic length of time. So i think you would be doing yourself a great justice to grind these for awhile and build your BR steadily to aspire to higher stakes and huge field MTT's,and have the BR to support the swings that come with them
