Hi TPE’ers.. This is my first time posting in this forum so here goes. I came across a hand ITM in a low stake tourney on pokerstars & just wanted opinions on whether this was the correct play.

Blinds: 900-1800 A150

Villain 1 : UTG +2 16bb

Villain 2: MP1 43bb

Hero : CO 42bb

UTG+2 (hand before was sucked out on) raises to 4014. could very easily be on tilt so I’m widening his opening range slightly more than usual.  MP1 calls and is playing vpip 56% & pf18% although I only have 18 hands on him, I can assume he is too playing a  wide calling range, especially with it being a low stake tourney.  I come along too with Jdiamond 10diamond ( everyone else folds)  & see a flop of 3club8diamond7diamond

Villain 1 checks, villain 2 also checks & I decide to bet around 35% to 5793.

Villain 1 then shoves his now 13.5 bb stack and is immediately called by Villain 2

I shoved over the top and done so without really thinking too much into Villain 2’s range after he calls the check shove. I have played with some hands in equilab and with the range of hands I put them on I am a favourite.

I would really appreciate some feed back on this spot. Can we just call instead of shoving? is it a fold? was shove correct?

By the way villain 1 had QclubQdiamond & villain 2 had 8spade8club

turn 5heart river 3spade Sigh …….. GG………

It is important to know what the stacks behind you are preflop as well.

As played I guess I am checking the flop and taking a free card, utg2 has about SPR1, and you have a passive guy in the middle if he calls or shove; you have a really nice draw there, with overcards to the board but I am not sure what kind of ranges would give you action to raise and GII OTF, I like that you are betting on the small side tow.

Hey Bigd.

Bigd says

I guess widening UG2’s opening range due the suckout is reasonable enough thinking. I would take a close look at UG2’s HUD stats before I went with this thinking though…if s/he is a reg they will probably be somewhat immune to suckout tilt. And 18 hands is not quite enough to cement in to fact the probability that MP1 is a call station.

I like your bet with your strong draw OTF after being checked to by both villains.

If V2 hadn’t called then I would also be running an equity calculation to discern whether I was getting the correct price to call vs. V1’s range. In game, without the benefit of an eq. calc., I expect this is a call.

When V2 comes along it is time to stop and think.

Fatal. I used to play like this. These days, I have incorporated a brake in to my thinking…I call it “The Mantra”, and I think it through every time I have a non-automatic decision to make. It runs as follows:

“What do I have? What does villian(s) have? What does villain(s) think I have?”. I never shove over the top without thinking. V2 has a significant stack, and probably a strong range and/or decent equity for calling V1. There are a lot of draws out there; I wouldn’t imagine he has a better flush draw than yours, and you have great equity against his strong made hands.

I think shoving is a mistake. What is your shove range from V2’S perspective? It is mainly comprised of draws, and this would be true even if V2 didn’t hold top set. It gives V2 an easy decision: call with his strong made hands; fold the rest.

I am calling this every time, balance be damned.
