Hero is sitting in middle position with 17, 000 and is dealt JJ.
Utg goes all in 1500
Utg+1 follows all in with 1200
Hero dumps all in because villian sitting on the button has 22,000, of course he calls as well
UTG and UTG+1 have nothing as I thought, it was approaching the money bubble and the blinds were 1000
Villian flips AK, and of course catches a K on the flop.

Say bye bye to Hero, with no money.

My question is, did I make a wrong play, or is it just up to the cards at that point. Maybe I should have just raised or called? How would you handle that situation?

Any reads on villain? What is your image?

Based on what you have said, with 17BB I would have pushed here as well. Most of the time he is going to fold here, and when he is holding AK and calling you, you are going to win the race more often than not as you have close to 15 percent more equity than him (in a two way pot, but you said the short stacks had nothing so…) So really, you want him to call you with AK here.

For me this is +EV as you can win the pot two ways, by villian folding (which will happen more often than not) and when villain does call with AK here, you also win the race more often than not. I’m a novice, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Thank you for your reply.  I went and walked my dog, and cleared my head.  I maybe was at the table for 2-3 hands.

Yes, I think your right!

I was thinking, I could have re-raised to 3000-4000, if he called and then raised after the flop (with the K on the board), I could have just folded (I doubt I would fold, Mr.Ego seems to get in the way), but if he jammed on my raise preflop, again, I would dive all in.

Sometimes, I think it's just up too the cards, and that can be a hard pill to swallow.

Good to go and clear your head when in doubt mate.

I wouldn't over think it too much though.  With 17 BB in this spot you shouldnt even think about re-raising light. It's a jam or a fold, and this kind of thing happens.  There are only 3 hands that are going to have you completely dominated which villian isn't going to wake up with very often, and if villain is calling with AQ+ you are a favourite.  It's just bad luck dude.

You had pocket Jacks with 17 big blinds, I don't think there's much else you could have done there. The only thing you might do differently is minraise instead of shoving, to encourage action from worse hands behind you. There's definitely no folding anywhere or getting away from this.

Getting it in with JJ vs AK here with around 2.5bb worth of shortstack dead money in the pot is a great spot for you. Try not to think about results so much. Things like “say bye bye to hero” seem to indicate that you're too focused on what actually happened, and berating yourself unnecessarily for what was a perfectly fine play. Keep your chin up – variance can be tough sometimes.
