Starting a new thread because it's been a while since I answered on this part of the forum. Also, in the last thread I incorrectly referred to myself as a “guest” pro so I'm correcting that mistake smile

Chris,

I feel I am a pretty solid player, make money, good roi, try to think outside the box, etc.  However, it is clear after reviewing a recent HH i still have a ton of leaks, some of which are glaring.  I do notice many of these while playing, but it's always right after the fact when I think all the way through the hand.  I find myself lost in the moment occasionally and it leads to some horrible hero calls (I know even good players have this issue) punting of stacks, etc.

How did you get to the point where you could think through hands fast enough while playing to be able to make correct decisions in the moment?

How do you completely separate yourself from the so-called ego wars and evaluate hands purely based on player and situational reads?

I think I am more looking for ways that you improved your in-game play the most.  I watch a lot of videos and take notes, obviously that helps a ton.  However, do you think HH reviews of your own tournaments are even more important?  I have some good friends in the community and I think joint HH reviews would be the most informative on improving ones play.  Guess thats enough questions for one post.  Looking forward to your responses!

DJ,

I still struggle with most of your questions from time to time; I don't think anyone is ever immune to them. Sounds like a ton of your issues posted here are covered by Jared Tendler's book, Mental Game of Poker.  Some control issues, making sure you give yourself the best chance to perform at your best, etc.

Nothing but experience and learning mistakes can better prevent you from punting stacks, overthinking “in the moment” with disregard for overall tournament position. Going back and learning where you went wrong, especially with an experienced coach, can speed up the learning curve immensely. Surely a group HH review would be helpful also.

I try to think of “ego wars” only in terms of “what is the % chance I think my opponent is doing x,y or z out of ego or spite?” If I think it's high enough, I'd be willing to play differently than usual (depending on my holdings and so many other factors). I engage in what could be construed as an “ego war” in my first series, “Metagame Adjustments” (i think videos after part 1 cover the FT where a villain attempted to pick on me).

I hope this helps and I covered most of what you were asking. Feel free to post more cool

Chris,

Appreciate the fast response.  I've been meaning to get Mental Game of Poker since I listened to his interview on the Thinking Poker Podcast.  Probably the perfect fit for the issues I'm having as you explained.  Will be picking it up this week.  Also looking to get Elements of Poker.  Have you read that one?

I'm definitely looking into getting coaching.  What are your rates?  You can PM me them if you'd prefer or email them to me at ihummer86@gmail.com.  I think in general just reviewing HHs is very important and I know a lot of us do not do enough of it.

I think I could have worded the 'ego-war' question better.  It would be better if I had an actual situation to bring up.  If I find a good one I'll come back with it though I do like the response.  I'll go back and watch 'Metagame Adjustments' and maybe pull something out of there as well. Will definitely be back with a few more questions I'm sure.

Alright, time for the Sunday grind.  Best of luck if you are playing today.

Ian

I have not read Elements yet but will look around for it.

Best of luck today to you, too.

Antonne was building a fort in his lounge room out of couch cushions. It was a great big fort, it even had a lookout. What was the problem?

Have you met darvin in person?

Dogs or cats?

Ninjas or guerillas?

im stumped on the fort problem but without too much thought.

i saw him at Soaring Eagle Casino for an HPT once but the closest we got to meeting was having dinner at nearby tables in a restaurant there.

Dogs in a G-D landslide

Ninjas but only because I think guerillas have started to be associated with bad connotations since 9-11. probably a subconcious choice on my part.

hope this helps!

You said on an a TPE podcast that you got coaching and it changed your game completely. Can you give a little insight into how you improved from coaching? It sounds like you were already a solid winning player before it. You said about 2/3 of the hands would be played differently after coaching. I'd like to hear more about that for sure

I am also very interested to your in when you believe a player should think of getting a coach?

Also how often as a winning pro do you have those days where everything you do is wrong you lose all your flips and end up well down?

The best insight I can give is that the entire coaching process changed my thought process in tournaments 100%. It added new facets of considerations I didn't even know were that important in tournaments to my every day decision making process.  I was a “solid” winning player at $26-$75s on FTP and made some runs in sunday warmup/million events on stars, but wasn't playing nearly to the level that I am now.

with coaching, i think the sooner the better, depending on the skill level of the coach youre looking for.  anyone can teach you some good habits when youre learning from the start.  the better you get the better coach youll need.

and id say i lose on 7 of 10 days (in online tournament sessions). so hopefully that gives you some insight

Hi Chris. I'm looking for coaching, and I like the idea of your HH review.

Here's the obstacles I have to overcome to do the HH review with you:

Where I play now doesn't have a HH saved that is compatible with HM or PT.

The options therefore are: I can stream the hands to you through skype as I flick through it on Tournament Indicators replayer.

Or I could play some €50-100 Tournaments on Pokerstars to build some readable historys for you to read through before the coaching session. How many tournament hands would you need more or less to fill the 90 mins?

If you had Tournament Indicator, I could maybe send you the full data file of mine, and you could flick through it that way. They also do a 24hr free trial for if this would work for you?

Thanks, hopefully we can sort something.. cool

thirdeye, cant believe i didnt see this sooner. the site gave me a new account so all my old subscriptions got deleted.  the HHs dont have to compatible with HM or PT, but preferably at least Universal Replayer. One of the three minimum, and the more the better.  Otherwise, I can't do much with it.

Ill PM you on here so we can exchange info
