I’ve always been curious about how training sites like TPE recruit their pros. Do you target people who post good strat advice in forums? Do you find out who’s crushing the games and approach a large number of people so that you can have your pick of the ones who are interested? Or does it mostly come from people you know personally?
What are the three main qualities you look for in a TPE pro? Is ‘results’ at the top of the list?
Most have been people we know and or friends of friends. Obviously the poker world is pretty big, but if you know a decent number of people, there is a REALLY good chance one of them knows the person you are trying to reach out to. It varies on how we have found people. Some people were sort of “chance encounters” like Danny. Others were suggested to us by other pros (like Cougars) and others we seek out based on results or being a person we respect their game.
I would say there are a few main qualities we look for. (1) they have to be good, which usually (although I guess not as a rule) means they have really good results. (2) they have to be able to teach/talk about poker. (3) They need to be trustworthy in terms of getting videos turned in when they say they will and stuff like that. I acutally think the top of the list would be ability to teach as opposed to results.
your 4 final tables is such a low ball prediction.
I predict a 4 bigdog FTs with 2 wins.
3 dannyN13 3 FTs with 1 win
2 KB FTs with 7 cashes
1 betudontbet FT but a cash over $100k
1 ronfez FT
2 Daryl Jace FTs
1 Marc alioto FT
so 14 FTs. can be vsde wsop orleans Caesars & any dailes

Why are there no videos released on Wednesday?
Totally missed this one!
no real great answer for this other than we made a decision to release 4 videos per week and we somewhat radomly chose Wednesday as an off day. Diego might correct me that there was more to the decision than that, but think it was pretty much that. As with everything involved in running TPE, we try to stike a balance. Some people can't keep up with 4 videos a week. Some people would like 7 videos a week. Some people like live sweats, some like HH reviews. Some like this pro, others like that pro. So we feel like 4 is a pretty good balance and in addition to other content (podcast, articles, forum, etc) provides a good base of materials each week to get better.

Do you still enjoy Poker (as i notice you too have a job & family). i sometimes find it difficult to motivate myself to keep on studying the game (TPE vids, books, forums). i also have a full-time job (running own business) and wish i had more time for Poker. Then also finding balance with family & life. Perhaps a podcast or video on motivating oneself – one with focus on pro's and one with focus on amateurs? If i may! So i guess my question is: how do you stay motivated?
It is definitely tough, and seems to be getting tougher the older my son gets. The countown is on to him leaving for college (in 3 years) and the limited time I have with him here at home is starting to freak me out a little bit. So Im trying to take a bit more time to spend with family.
I guess for me I am fortunate because even though I do not get to play as much poker as I used to, I love the other things I do with my time as well (family, running TPE, working for Lonerider) so I never find myself saying “god, it sucks that i have to do these things instead of play poker”.
I think the key to me staying motivated is talking to other people about hands and what not. Sometimes I will be planning not to play and then I will get on Skype and chat with marc or HurricaneJeff or Casey or Danny and those guys are grinding and ill be like “shit, I gotta get in grind mode” and fire up some tourneys. I do however think it can be bad to play when you are NOT motivated to. Playing just for the sake of getting in your hours is probably not going to be profitable in the long run.
Maybe we'll find a way to work this in to a podcast soon.

I know, I am not a pro…but maybe that will make this thread interesting
As my 2,000th approaches I'm finding myself more stoked than ever about our community here at TPE. I figured a thread like this would be a cool way to celebrate 2,000 posts! So I'll start by saying thank you to all of our members for making this place what it is!! You guys are amazing and I'm happy to have gotten to know (and even meet) many of you.
With that, you can ask me anything in this thread and I'll do my best to answer. Ask me questions about poker, life, my music business days, starting and operating TPE, etc. Fire Away!

Any suggestions for calming your nerves at the beginning of a big live event? What tips do you have for keeping a high level of focus for a 12+ hour session?
A little light exercise the morning of a big tourney is great. I'm not a huge exerciser in general, but some of the days I feel the best during the Vegas grind is the days I get in the pool at the house and do a few laps. Even 15 minutes of swimming makes a huge difference and obviously does not take a ton of time.
I don't always wear head phones, but sometimes I do. and Sometimes I just put them on (with the music off) but on sunglasses, pull up my hood and focus up. Usually I do this if I find myself getting distracted by others at the table talkling to me. Allows me to ignore them without appearing rude.
Also, if you make dinner break, that has to be your recharge time. So make sure you get a light dinner and maybe even take a walk. I would always go outside at the Venetian and walk around a bit. Get some air, refresh. You've been sitting all day and are going to be sitting all night, so stretch those legs!

Favorite video series is a TOUGH one. I'm a live sweat guy. I think I would have to go with the Ben Warrington / Bigdog 109r dual live sweat where they ended up at the same table and RFB spliced them together to get both of their commentary in an alternating fashion. That was just a super cool series all around. The one that was the most fun for me was the Stick It To The Man of my Step 6 win just because I was so terrible and that made it a lot of fun to watch getting berated by the pros.
Most threatening competitor. Online it was always Battler. I don't seem to run in to him much anymore, but back when we seemed to end up at the same table a lot the guy just owned me on the reg. Also, not to kiss his ass, but HurricaneJeff always gave me fits when we would end up at the same table.
I'm sure this question as been asked several times but is possible for someone like me to play poker online for a living? I have a few thousand in savings, I have a full-time job now but I hate it! I am an american player been playing online since 2006 was getting ready to go pro in 2011 right before black Friday which totally screwed me. Can it be done?
Yeah, im doing it but “a living” for me is completely different than it would be for most. I only spend roughly 1000-1500 a month for everything since I only provide for me and I LOVE being cheap and living like a nomad. The key is getting in lots of volume, proper BRM, and keeping your expenses low.

Coke or Pepsi?
Is it still possible to play online MTTs for a living if you are not at the top 10-20?
Will the San Diego Chargers ever win a Suberbowl?
Top 3 TV shows?
Any food tips for MTT grinders? Do you prepare food before each session (if so, what kind of food?) or do you run into the kitchen to grab a bite at breaks?
Will there be any mixed game MTT vids / pros coming up on TPE? There have been 2 or 3 theory PLO vids and 1 or 2 HORSE videos but that is about it..
Any advice on how to get a payout from Lock poker?

How much % wise of your poker bankroll do you take to vegas?
Do you pay for travel/accomodation and food out of your bankroll aswell?
I pretty much take it all
I essentially grind local cash games and online to earn enough to play what I can play in Vegas each summer. But I also sell and swap quite a bit of action in the tournaments I play in Vegas, so I don't usually have all of myself there. I just make sure I have enough that when I come back I can put it back to work in lower variance games (online and live cash) to grind it back up for the following summer. This is obviously different for me as I do not play poker for a living.
I do however pay for all of my poker trips with poker money. Can't remember the last time I used “life money” to play poker or to pay travel expenses and I try to keep it that way.
That might change next year, as I'm going to try and play the main event, and if I cant grind up the roll to do it, I may just tap in to my life roll.
For Vegas, TPE gets a house so that is a pretty large expense I dont have to worry about. Then I just have to make sure I have enough to eat.

we do, but im not a fan.
I have not had a ton of Australian beers, but one I recall really liking was I think called White Rabbit? It was like a black lager or something.
Any suggestions? Id love to check some more out!
Im not sure if you would be able to get these in Murrica but ill list a few Australian craft beers I typically enjoy.
They are:
Stone & Wood – both pale ale and the lager
Bighead – or most of the Burleigh Heads Beer co. range
Brisbane Pale Ale
Little Creatures: Rogers (dark beer) – their pale ale is quite tip top also.
I think you'd have the most luck finding the Little Creatures range over there. Stone & Wood is one of my favourite and being only 300km from the brewery in Byron Bay our local bottle-o only gets 3 cartons of it a week. I assume they typically give most of their time and effort to brewing of kegs for the watering holes found around Brisbane as they can be found in a lot of places on tap.
I cant remember the last time I saw someone in Australia drink a fosters…

anything from james squire (their golden ale is awesome) or matilda bay (fat yak pale ale) is more “commercial” craft beer and you might get it there

Why do I continue to do things I know i shouldn't when playing poker? Why take the time to learn the right strategy if I am just gonna say **** it and make stupid calls? Bad day….
I ask myself this alot. Marc and I constantly remind each other “take 5 seconds”. If we followed this rule on more decisions we would win way more often!

Hi Killingbird.
I am a new guy at TPE and I want to know if youre still answering questions.
What do you recomend to get better at poker in all ways? youre a good player and I want to learn everything.
Thanks guy and GL.
Well being a member of TPE is a great start! But also make sure and surround yourself with some other poker players who you can talk strategy, bounce ideas off, etc.
Also, look in to other ways to take in poker info, podcasts for example.
Finally, make sure you are reviewing your own Hands and Hand Histories. No matter how good we are, we can always get better!
