Hello guys!
Just joined TNE, heard so much about it, and i really want to improve my tournament game,
so I’m guessing this is the place to be??
Anyways, lets kick it off.
I’m utg, and dealt AQ of suits, and I’m opening here every time in this scenario obviously.
One of the shorter stacks flat calls behind me. Sirens go off immediately given hes image and stats.
Hes running around 8/6/0 at the time over a very small sample of 30 hands. anyways.
So I’m giving him a very strong range here, guessing he will just shove or fold smaller pairs, and maybe AQ+ AJs.
Given that I’m in bad shape.
I check for pot control. Thinking of folding when he bets.
But i do have TPTK, and there is bounty in play, and in some outcomes i can win right?
Turn is same thought prosess for me. And there is also a FD on the board. i can have AKs here. i can have other draws.
So my backup plan is to fire the river if it completes.
So flush complete and i fire.
He should not, but i believe he is able to fold KK and AA here
Do i fold flop here?
We’re pretty much commited in later streets

I’m no expert of course, but just for a little discussion… It kinda just seems like a cooler situation. I feel like you’re never giving up your hand that easily in this situation unless you’re putting him on that EXACT hand of pocket whores or an overpair.
I kinda feel like with KK and AA he’s most likely 3-bet shoving his 21 or so bigs though so I can see you not putting him on those unless he’s the type to slow play. I think most people would play this out exactly like you did, but on the river I probably would have just checked back since I know he has at least a Q at this point, so it’s either we both have AQ he checks and we chop, he has two pair (most likely QJ could be in his flatting range) he bets for value and I’m beat, or it’s some sort of cooler situation like we have here and I maybe lose less than I would because he might not have gone all in and bet a smaller amount for value but that’s sort of wishful thinking.
That being said, the line you took also works (representing the flush) because you played it exactly like you did have that draw by checking back for pot control on the flop and turn and then barreling the river. However I think at that point he was just too committed to the pot to ever fold that set to the shove.
There’s also an argument to be had for c-betting the flop against this player but just really small to see if he over-bets you. Most times a player with his stats goes hard or goes home when he makes a big hand so I feel like if he did have an AQ or KQ he might just call you. With QQ he’s probably overbetting. With QJ he might be over-betting as well, but again you don’t have many hands on this player so it’s tough to assume what his tendencies would be.
Anyways just my thoughts :p

It’s very good that you’re paying attention to the situation and looking for opportunities to make reads based on the info you have. Here I think you’re right to put the flat caller on a very very big hand, and for that reason I’d actually be OK with just check-folding the flop. I don’t agree that you can rep a flush very credibly here, and even if you could I think trying to get someone to fold an overpair for less than 1/3 pot on the river is not a good idea anyway. So really check-folding at any point would be fine I think, depending on how much stock you want to put in your read. Failing that, I think check-calling all the way would be best. I mean, you can really only beat a bluff, so you might as well give him as much chance as possible to bluff. If the flop checks through, then you can start value betting turn and river.

If he truly is such a nit, and he’s taking the betting lead, I think the worst hand you can realistically put him on is AQ. Even your best case is that he might be bluffing with Acxc, but don’t nit usually take the free card on the turn instead of putting in 1/2 their stack on a bluff?
And as Andrew pointed out, he’s pot committed, even if he believes you have the flush, the pot odds are so good he has to call off with anything that beats a bluff.
