I have a hard time with this situation too. Hate to call, even with position, and 3 betting opens you to a 4 bet that you  don't like either.

3 bet folding not a good option here?

I have a hard time in these spots..

It's an UTG raise which should mean strength but what about the need to chip up and build my stack. Do we avoid every tough situation just because there is aggression in front of us?

I've been just open folding a lot more in these spots against an utg raise from a pllayer who hasn't been opening much….I don't mind a 3b/fold though either…..if he were to 4b us there we have to know we are crushed almost always.

To expand a little on my reply, his stats show that not only does he raise a small amount, but he limps a lot.  This is the type of player that you like to have late in tournaments because you know when he limps he isn't willing to play for his stack, and when he raises he is.  For him to open UTG when he is in the habit of open limping a lot of pots and could very easily just do so there seems very strong to me.  I don't think 3-bet folding is horrible, but I just think he will shove so many times that it wont be profitable and cost us 7BB that realistically we can spare, but I would rather be in the 40bb range then the 30.  Just gives you more chips to attack the table in better spots than this.

Yep… I don't like folding a hand like AQ but here it makes sense. There are no antes so I don't mind passing on a possible 3 bet spot here because his stats indicate he's going to flat or shove a lot. I'm not calling a shove and I don't really want to be flatted so folding > 3 betting > calling in my opinion.

this is my way of thinking and this is the point in the tourney where villain starts to widen his opening range based on the stack they have and the fact that they will be opening hands like 44+ and A9,A10,AJ and i dont think you can play the game always worrying about the 4 hands you are crushed by . so i feel you have option you can peel a flop and go from there and if you have to fold you still have 37bbs, i also have 3 bet folded here before that play would leave you with 32 bbs, i would fold to a 4 bet but i would prolly see the flop and float 1 here and go from there. just a note at this blind level remember the next level you will still have the same amount of big blinds its just the ante they introduce following this level

On UB I think this is the case that they introduce the ante but on both FTP and Stars the blinds go from 100/200 to 120/240/25 on FTP and 100/200 to 125/250/25 on http://FTP…..

is there something wrong with flatting and playing a pot in position with an effective stack of 40 bigs?

Thanks for all the insight and varying views.

My gut told me to call or RR but I folded instead. I'm trying to push myself to get involved a little more (to build my stack instead of watching it dwindle away) especially in position and I think this would be a good spot as well.

I flat here unless I have a dynamic to get it in, unless villain is noteably super nitty over a good sample.  You should flat AA/KK and other strong hands here sometimes as well.

I would probably just flat here and see the flop. 3-betting is also an option with your stack size, a raise to 1500-1800 would not hurt you if you have to fold later to 4-bet or bet after the flop. I personally would just flat even though his VPIP is high, his PFR % with the fact of being UTG could mean something big AK,AA,KK at least in my expierence.

I'd flat him here and see what the flop brings. I am not sure how hard I would push with a TP type hand, but I would certainly take my stab and see what happens.
