I got a bad habit of spazzing out deep in tourneys with this sort of thing so I'm gonna keep posting my shit hands even though I keep looking like a tard :O

Might not seem like it but I am getting better thanks to help with these on the forum.

Ok, i just joined the table so no reads on anyone which makes the play even more stupid I guess.

Planned to bet/call on the river on the assumption he checked behind the turn because he was worried about the K or had low pockets with a fd.

Made the river bet to make it look like a value bet and just after doing it, knew it was stupid but was too late then (should have given up.)

My whole line in this hand was pretty shit, especially checking the turn and betting the river (no idea why keep doing this!)

My qtn is, how should I play this hand correctly this close to the $ with av stack?

thx

(soz about the txt formatting coz the end of the line keep getting chopped off.)

The 3-bet call preflop is fine.  But the lead out bet into the preflop 3-bettor makes no sense.

The purpose of betting is to make worse hands call and better hands fold.

The only hand that’s better than you that might fold is QQ, and even then they never would to one bet on the flop.

Most other hands that you beat that would 3-bet you preflop (like TT, 99, AQ) may fold to your bet.

We’re not happy about the K on the flop because AK and KQ have now joined the “hands that beat us” category.

I would check to the raiser on the flop and call most bets to see what he does on the turn.

If he checks behind on the turn, I may either put out a value bet or check again depending on my read.

Most of the time, I would check/call the river, minimizing my losses when I’m behind and giving my opponent another opportunity to bluff when we’re ahead.

If he bets again on the turn, I would recommend folding.

Our opponent has now shown strength three times, which tends to mean a strong hand, although a bluff is not out of the question.

But those are the exception, not the rule, AND we don’t have a read on him.

His value hands that we beat (TT, 99) would also be scared of our 3-bet call preflop, the K on the flop, and our c-bet call at this point

(This is when I would value bet the river, if he checks behind on the turn)

Another thing to consider is your bet sizing.

You make a 51% pot donk bet into the preflop 3-bettor, leaving yourself about 10k behind in a 15.8k pot when he calls.

Now the only bet left for either of you is your whole stack with JJ on a K high board.

To summarize, call the 3-bet, check/call the flop c-bet, and evaluate on the turn.

If he bets, we should be folding a majority of the time against an unknown.

If he checks behind, we may either value bet or check, depending on the river card and our read.

Unrelated to this topic, but is anyone else having trouble posting replies?  I keep getting an error message when I hit post new reply, I hit refresh and it posts my reply, but the MTT Poker Strategy lobby doesn’t say I replied.

Here's the message I get:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class phpmailerException in /home/olgedge9/public_html/wp-includes/class-phpmailer.php on line 2319

The site seems to be having some issues – yes I have seen that message too.

Don't beat yourself too much on this one – you ran into a buzzsaw.

I'm not going to address the intracacies of this particular hand,

but I am going to talk about your process a little bit.  It kind of seems you decided to

go to all the way with JJ (because you pretty much ignored all the warnings).

It's a consideration, I'll give you that, but this villain kept sending the message that it was

probably not going to be enough.  Your flop bet got no respect and it should have been enough

to shut him down if he can't beat JJ, though he might float a draw (which hits the turn).

There was lot in his range that you are not going to like – AA, KK, QQ, AK included.

If you were thinking that K slowed him down then the first stop for that is QQ, not low pockets.

You thought about what the turn meant to his hand but you do not mention how he interpreted what the turn

meant to your hand.  Or at least your best guess on that.

He would have to consider you maybe hit a flush and even defined you on the Kc.

Anyway my point is – slow it down and take the time to think through your actions.  Play chess.  Don't be so eager

to go all the way, especially with JJ.  Take your time and put little more focus on putting yourself in the other guys seat.

This should help a little so you do not end up stuck on JJ like this one (and he was not going to go away –

so again don't be too hard on yourself – at least on this particular hand.  Address the bigger picture.).
